Lovebird Care Guide
A comprehensive care guide for companion lovebirds, including all nine species, housing, nutrition, social behavior, pair versus single-bird management, reproductive control, enrichment, training, infectious disease, and lifelong preventive care.
Lovebirds are small African parrots with unusually bold personalities, intense social behavior, rapid movement, strong chewing instincts, and a surprising capacity for territorial aggression. Their compact size can make them appear easier to keep than larger parrots, but successful care requires much more than a small decorative cage and a seed cup.
The genus Agapornis contains nine recognized species. Most are native to sub-Saharan Africa; the Grey-headed Lovebird is native to Madagascar. Three species dominate companion aviculture: the Rosy-faced or Peach-faced Lovebird (Agapornis roseicollis), Fischer’s Lovebird (A. fischeri), and Masked or Yellow-collared Lovebird (A. personatus). Other species are less common, uncommon, or rare in captivity. Conservation status and natural history vary considerably between them. World Parrot Trust currently lists Black-cheeked Lovebirds as Vulnerable and Lilian’s Lovebirds as Near Threatened, while several others remain widespread.
Lovebirds are highly social, but their name should not be interpreted to mean that every bird must be housed as a bonded pair. A single lovebird can thrive when provided with frequent social interaction, training, exercise, and enrichment. Conversely, two lovebirds placed together do not automatically become compatible. Females in particular can be strongly territorial, and serious aggression can occur between unfamiliar or mismatched birds.

Lovebird Species
Rosy-faced / Peach-faced Lovebird — Agapornis roseicollis
This is the most common lovebird in companion homes. Wild-type adults are green with a rosy-peach face and blue rump. World Parrot Trust lists the species at about 15 cm (6 in) and roughly 46–63 g. Many color mutations have been developed in aviculture, including blue-series, lutino, pied, cinnamon, and numerous combinations.
Rosy-faced Lovebirds are energetic, bold, and strong chewers. Females are especially well known for shredding paper or bark into long strips and tucking nesting material into the rump feathers for transport. This behavior is normal reproductive biology, but persistent nest-building in a companion hen can accompany chronic reproductive stimulation.
Fischer’s Lovebird — Agapornis fischeri
Fischer’s Lovebirds are approximately 15 cm (5.8 in) and 42–58 g. Wild-type adults have an orange-red face, olive-green crown, yellowish upper breast, green body, blue rump, red beak, and a prominent white eye-ring. They are active, social, and widely maintained in aviculture, although less commonly than Rosy-faced Lovebirds.
Masked / Yellow-collared Lovebird — Agapornis personatus
Masked Lovebirds are approximately 14.5 cm (5.6 in) and 43–50 g. Wild-type adults have a dark brown-black head, white eye-ring, red beak, yellow collar and breast, green body, and blue rump. Blue and other color mutations are common in captivity.
Black-cheeked Lovebird — Agapornis nigrigenis
The Black-cheeked Lovebird is a small eye-ring lovebird, generally around 13–14 cm and approximately 40 g. It has a dark face, white eye-ring, red beak, green body, and subdued rust-colored upper chest. It is rare in aviculture and is classified as Vulnerable in the wild. Preservation of pure species identity is particularly important.
Lilian’s / Nyasa Lovebird — Agapornis lilianae
Lilian’s Lovebird is one of the smallest lovebirds, around 13.5 cm and approximately 28–37 g. It has a salmon-orange face, green body, and bright red beak. It is rare in captivity and Near Threatened in the wild. Because it resembles Fischer’s and other eye-ring lovebirds, correct identification and avoidance of hybrid breeding are important.
Black-winged / Abyssinian Lovebird — Agapornis taranta
The Black-winged Lovebird is the largest lovebird, around 17 cm and approximately 48 g. Adult males have a red forehead and black wing feathers; females remain predominantly green without the male’s red forehead. This species is uncommon in aviculture and has somewhat different natural feeding ecology, including figs and highland plant foods.
Grey-headed / Madagascar Lovebird — Agapornis canus
The Grey-headed Lovebird is native to Madagascar rather than continental Africa and is small, around 14 cm and 25–28 g. Adult males have a pale grey head, neck, and upper breast, while females remain predominantly green. It is uncommon in ordinary companion homes.
Red-faced / Red-headed Lovebird — Agapornis pullarius
Red-faced Lovebirds are around 15 cm and approximately 43 g. Males have a stronger orange-red facial mask and black underwing coverts; females have a more orange face and green underwing coverts. They are uncommon in captivity and their natural nesting biology differs from the more familiar cavity-nesting lovebirds.
Black-collared / Swindern’s Lovebird — Agapornis swindernianus
The Black-collared Lovebird is approximately 13 cm and 39–40 g. It is green with a narrow black nuchal collar and is not generally found in aviculture. Its natural diet includes fig seeds and other forest foods, and it should be viewed as a specialized species rather than a routine companion lovebird.
Sex Identification
Most commonly kept lovebirds are not reliably sexed by external appearance. Pelvic spacing, head shape, posture, paper-shredding behavior, and temperament are not sufficiently dependable for definitive sex identification.
DNA sex testing is the most practical method for monomorphic species. Some less common species are sexually dimorphic: Black-winged, Grey-headed, and Red-faced Lovebirds show visible adult male-female differences.
What Wild Lovebirds Teach Us
Wild lovebirds live in active social groups and spend substantial time flying, climbing, feeding on grasses, seeds, fruit, leaves, buds, and other vegetation, drinking, bathing, and investigating nesting sites. They are not sedentary cage birds.
Captive husbandry should restore movement, social interaction, chewing, foraging, bathing, and environmental choice. The small body size of a lovebird should never be used to justify a small, barren cage.
Choosing a Healthy Lovebird
A healthy lovebird should be bright, alert, coordinated, and active. The bird should grip normally, move confidently between perches, breathe quietly at rest, and have clean eyes and nostrils. The vent should be clean and plumage reasonably smooth.
Persistent fluffing, sleeping excessively during the day, open-mouth breathing, tail bobbing at rest, poor balance, reduced appetite, swollen abdomen, abnormal droppings, feather abnormalities, or reluctance to move should be investigated.
Most small parrots, including lovebirds, are preferably parent-reared or appropriately hand-reared and fully weaned before sale. Inexperienced hand-feeding creates risk of aspiration, crop burns, crop stasis, infection, nutritional disease, and developmental problems.
Quarantine and First Veterinary Visit
A newly acquired lovebird should receive an examination by a veterinarian experienced in avian medicine. If other birds are present, quarantine should ideally occur in a separate room for approximately 30–45 days with separate bowls, toys, and cleaning equipment.
Diagnostic testing should be individualized according to source, age, clinical findings, and future contact with other birds. Chlamydiosis, polyomavirus, circovirus/PBFD, and other tests may be appropriate depending on risk.
Cage Size and Design
Lovebirds are small but extremely active. A long horizontal flight-style cage is preferable to a narrow tall cage. For a single companion lovebird, a cage around 30 × 18 × 18 inches (76 × 46 × 46 cm) or larger is a practical starting point when substantial daily out-of-cage exercise is provided. A bonded pair benefits from still more room.
World Parrot Trust species accounts frequently recommend aviaries or enclosures about 4 ft (1.2 m) long for many lovebird species, illustrating how much more space these birds can use when given the opportunity.
Bar spacing should be narrow enough to prevent the head from passing between bars. Approximately 3/8 to 7/16 inch (9.5–11 mm) is a useful range for most lovebirds.
Furnishing the Cage
Provide multiple perch types and diameters, feeding stations, climbing routes, swings, destructible items, and foraging opportunities while preserving open space for movement.
Lovebirds often enjoy swings and moving perches but should also have stable perches for sleeping and feeding. Do not overfill the cage with toys to the point that the bird cannot fly or move normally.
Perches and Foot Health
Natural branches of varied diameter help distribute pressure across the feet. Small lovebirds benefit from relatively thin branches that allow the toes to wrap comfortably without the claws meeting underneath.
Suitable bird-safe woods may include properly identified and prepared willow, apple, pear, birch, maple, mulberry, manzanita, and similar untreated branches. Avoid pesticide contamination, roadside collection, mold, and chemically treated lumber.
Sandpaper perch covers should not be used. Abrasive concrete or mineral perches should not serve as the primary resting perch.
Cage Placement
Place the cage where the bird can observe household activity without being in constant traffic. Avoid kitchens, strong drafts, uncontrolled direct sun, and areas where cats, dogs, or young children can reach the cage.
Lovebirds can squeeze through surprisingly small openings and are fast fliers. Cage doors and food-access doors should latch securely.
Temperature and Humidity
Healthy acclimated lovebirds usually tolerate ordinary household temperatures well. Approximately 65–80°F (18–27°C) is reasonable for most companion birds when changes are gradual.
Moderate household humidity is generally adequate. Avoid damp, mold-prone conditions and very dry air. Good ventilation is more important than targeting one exact humidity value.
Sleep and Light Cycle
Most lovebirds benefit from approximately 10–12 hours of quiet darkness each night. Excessively long artificial days can contribute to chronic reproductive stimulation.
A consistent schedule is helpful. Dark nest boxes, fabric huts, tents, and enclosed sleeping structures should not be routinely provided to nonbreeding birds because they can promote territorial and reproductive behavior and may create entanglement hazards.
Bathing
Many lovebirds are enthusiastic bathers. A shallow dish, misting, wet leafy greens, or other safe bathing opportunities can be offered regularly. World Parrot Trust species accounts specifically note bathing behavior in several lovebird species.
Plain water is sufficient. Allow the bird to dry in a comfortable draft-free environment.
Flight and Exercise
Lovebirds are fast, agile fliers. Daily flight or vigorous climbing exercise is central to maintaining cardiovascular fitness, muscle tone, coordination, and behavioral health.
When safe flight can be provided, preserving flight is preferable. Secure doors and windows, turn off ceiling fans, make glass surfaces visible, exclude predators, and block access to kitchens, toilets, hot surfaces, and toxic materials.
Routine wing clipping should not be automatic. If a trim is considered necessary for a genuine safety reason, it should be conservative and allow controlled descent rather than causing the bird to fall.
Nutrition
A nutritionally complete formulated small-parrot diet should provide the foundation for most companion lovebirds. All-seed diets are nutritionally inadequate and commonly deficient in vitamin A, calcium, essential amino acids, and other nutrients.
A practical starting framework for many healthy adult lovebirds is approximately 60–70% complete formulated diet, 20–30% vegetables and leafy greens, about 5–10% fruit, and about 5–10% seeds or other high-value foods. These proportions are practical husbandry guidelines rather than proven species-specific nutrient requirements.
Vegetables should usually receive more emphasis than fruit. Good choices include dark leafy greens, broccoli, bok choy, peppers, carrots, pumpkin, squash, peas, green beans, and similar bird-safe foods.
Seeds and Millet
Lovebirds naturally consume seeds, including grass and cereal seeds, but wild seed intake occurs in the context of extensive movement and dietary diversity. Captive seed mixtures should not become the entire diet.
Millet spray and small seed portions are useful as training rewards, foraging foods, and occasional enrichment. Free-choice sunflower-heavy mixtures can provide excessive calories.
Converting a Seed-Dependent Lovebird
Never starve a lovebird into accepting pellets. Because lovebirds are small, even modest absolute weight loss can be clinically important.
Establish a baseline weight using a gram scale. During active conversion, daily weighing at approximately the same time is useful. A persistent downward trend, marked decline in droppings, weakness, or weight loss approaching 10% of baseline should prompt reassessment and veterinary guidance.
Introduce formulated food gradually in familiar feeding locations. Offer pellets or other complete formulations during normal morning appetite, use positive social modeling, and incorporate balanced food into simple foraging tasks.
Vitamin A, Calcium, and Seed Diets
Seed-heavy diets predispose lovebirds to vitamin A deficiency, calcium imbalance, poor bone quality, reproductive disease, and other nutritional problems. Vitamin A supports normal epithelial tissues, respiratory health, immune function, and reproduction.
Correction should emphasize a balanced formulated diet and carotenoid-rich vegetables rather than indiscriminate vitamin supplementation. High-dose vitamin A can be toxic.
Calcium is especially important in laying hens. However, calcium supplementation should not be used as the sole strategy for chronic egg laying; the reproductive drive itself must also be addressed.
Water and Grit
Fresh water should always be available. Lovebirds often bathe in water dishes or contaminate them with food, so bowls may need changing more than once daily.
Lovebirds hull seeds before swallowing them and do not require digestive grit. Excessive grit consumption can cause gastrointestinal problems.
Single Lovebird or Pair?
Lovebirds are strongly social, but there is no requirement that every companion lovebird be housed with another lovebird. A single bird can thrive when it receives substantial daily social interaction, training, exercise, and independent enrichment.
A bonded pair may direct most social attention toward one another and become less interested in human handling. That is not a welfare problem if the birds are healthy and appropriately managed.
Two unfamiliar lovebirds should never simply be placed together and assumed to bond. Introductions should occur gradually through adjacent cages or neutral supervised spaces. Females can be especially territorial and can seriously injure other birds.
Female Territoriality and Aggression
Lovebird females can be remarkably assertive. Territorial behavior often intensifies around cage corners, huts, nest boxes, paper piles, food bowls, and dark spaces.
Owners should avoid reaching blindly into a nest-like area or forcing a territorial bird from its cage. Target training, stationing, and allowing the bird to exit voluntarily are safer approaches.
Do not house lovebirds with smaller or less assertive species simply because the cage is large enough. A lovebird can injure another bird quickly.
Paper Shredding and Nest-Building
Shredding is a normal lovebird behavior and should not be eliminated. Provide paper, cardboard, palm materials, and bird-safe branches as destructible enrichment.
In Rosy-faced Lovebirds, females may cut long strips and tuck them into rump feathers. In eye-ring species, nesting material is often carried in the beak. These behaviors can help identify reproductive stimulation but should not be used as a reliable sex test.
If a nonbreeding hen becomes persistently nest-focused, reduce access to dark cavities and accumulations of nesting material, protect the dark sleep period, avoid sexual body petting, and reduce excessive calorie-dense foods.
Egg Laying and Reproductive Disease
Lovebirds are prolific breeders, and companion hens can become chronic egg layers even without a male. Repeated egg production can deplete calcium reserves, contribute to weight loss, and increase the risk of egg binding, oviductal disease, cloacal problems, and other reproductive complications.
Management includes maintaining 10–12 hours of darkness, eliminating nest-like spaces, avoiding body petting over the back and pelvis, preventing constant access to shreddable nesting accumulations when the bird is hormonally stimulated, reducing excessive high-fat foods, and increasing exercise and foraging.
Behavior and Training
Lovebirds learn quickly and respond well to positive reinforcement. Useful behaviors include step-up, targeting, stationing, recall, entering a carrier, standing on a gram scale, and returning to the cage.
Training is particularly helpful for territorial birds because it replaces forced handling with voluntary movement. Punishment, yelling, chasing, striking the beak, and spraying water as discipline should be avoided.
Foraging and Enrichment
Lovebirds need daily opportunities to chew, shred, climb, and search for food. Suitable enrichment includes paper parcels, cardboard, palm-leaf toys, untreated bird-safe branches, swings, ladders, puzzle feeders, and small amounts of measured food hidden in foraging materials.
Clean untreated pinecones can be used when they are from known pesticide-free areas, thoroughly cleaned and dried, and free from mold, insects, sap contamination, and environmental pollutants.
Toy Safety
Inspect toys frequently for exposed wire, open chain links, frayed rope, loose fibers, sharp metal, small detachable pieces, and openings that could trap a toe, head, or neck.
Choose appropriately sized bells without an accessible loose or removable internal clapper.
Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease
Lovebirds are among the parrots in which psittacine beak and feather disease can occur. Young birds are most commonly affected. Abnormal emerging feathers, feather loss in areas the bird cannot reach, malformed pin feathers, progressive feather changes, and recurrent infections warrant diagnostic evaluation.
The virus is environmentally persistent and can spread through feather dust, dander, droppings, and contaminated equipment. Quarantine and testing are important in breeding collections and multi-bird homes.
Polyomavirus
Polyomavirus is particularly important in nestlings and juvenile parrots. Young lovebirds may develop sudden illness, abdominal enlargement, poor crop emptying, hemorrhage, abnormal feathering, weakness, or sudden death. Adult carriers may show little or no disease.
Breeding facilities should use good biosecurity and veterinary-guided testing when appropriate.
Avian Chlamydiosis
Chlamydia psittaci can infect lovebirds and can also infect people. Signs in birds may include lethargy, reduced appetite, weight loss, respiratory or ocular discharge, and abnormal droppings, although some infected birds have few signs.
Suspected infection requires veterinary diagnosis and appropriate treatment, hygiene, and attention to human exposure.
Macrorhabdus / Avian Gastric Yeast
Macrorhabdus ornithogaster is encountered disproportionately in small companion birds, including lovebirds, budgerigars, cockatiels, parrotlets, and finches.
Clinical signs can include chronic or intermittent weight loss, poor condition despite eating, regurgitation, abnormal droppings, or undigested food. Some birds may carry the organism without obvious illness. Diagnosis and treatment should be directed by an avian veterinarian.
Feather-Destructive Behavior
Lovebirds can develop feather-destructive behavior or, less commonly, self-trauma. Medical causes should be investigated before assuming boredom or a behavioral origin.
Potential contributors include nutritional disease, skin or follicular disease, infection, reproductive stimulation, pain, environmental stress, social conflict, sleep disruption, inadequate exercise, and insufficient foraging or chewing opportunities.
Obesity and Fatty Liver Disease
Lovebirds can become overweight on unrestricted seed diets, especially when housed in small cages with limited flight. Chronic overnutrition can contribute to hepatic lipidosis and other metabolic disease.
Measured feeding, regular gram-scale weights, body-condition assessment, and daily exercise are important preventive measures.
Heavy-Metal and Household Toxins
Lovebirds are persistent chewers and may ingest zinc or lead from cage hardware, jewelry, curtain weights, old paint, metal toys, stained-glass materials, or household objects.
Other major hazards include overheated nonstick cookware, smoke, vaping aerosols, aerosol cleaners, scented candles, incense, essential-oil aerosols, toxic plants, open water, ceiling fans, electrical cords, medications, cats, and dogs.
A cat bite or scratch requires prompt veterinary care even when the visible wound is small.
Weight Monitoring
A digital gram scale capable of accurately measuring small birds is one of the most useful pieces of lovebird equipment. Healthy adults can often be weighed weekly; daily weighing is useful during diet conversion, illness, reproductive episodes, or recovery.
Because lovebirds weigh only a few dozen grams, small absolute changes can represent meaningful percentages of body weight.
Understanding Droppings
Normal droppings contain feces, white urates, and liquid urine. Diet, fruit intake, bathing, and stress can temporarily alter appearance.
Persistent reduction in fecal volume, black or bloody material, marked polyuria, undigested food, or dramatic changes associated with poor appetite should be evaluated.
Recognizing Illness
Lovebirds can deteriorate rapidly because of their small size. Early signs may include quieter behavior, decreased vocalization, sleeping more, reduced climbing, decreased appetite, weight loss, altered droppings, or a change in social behavior.
Persistent fluffing, weakness, sitting on the cage floor, open-mouth breathing, or inability to perch should be treated as serious signs.
When Veterinary Attention Is Needed
Prompt avian veterinary care is appropriate for difficulty breathing, repeated vomiting, marked appetite loss, significant weight loss, collapse, seizures, inability to perch, active bleeding, abdominal swelling, persistent straining, suspected egg binding, major changes in droppings, predator contact, suspected toxin exposure, or sudden severe behavioral change accompanied by physical illness.
Supportive Care While Seeking Veterinary Help
Keep a sick lovebird quiet and minimize unnecessary handling. Comfortable supplemental warmth may help many ill birds when overheating is not suspected. Place food and water within easy reach and lower perches for weak birds.
Do not force fluids or food into the mouth of a weak or breathing-compromised bird unless specifically instructed by a veterinarian. Aspiration can be fatal.
Carrier Training
A small secure carrier is essential for veterinary visits and emergencies. Familiarize the bird with the carrier before it is needed. Reinforce entering voluntarily and occasionally use the carrier for neutral or pleasant experiences.
Preventive Veterinary Care
A newly acquired lovebird should receive an initial avian veterinary examination. Healthy adults should generally be examined at least annually. Older birds, chronic egg layers, birds with recurrent respiratory or digestive disease, or those with weight problems may need more frequent care.
Preventive examinations should assess weight, pectoral muscle and fat stores, feet, beak, oral cavity, choana, eyes, nostrils, plumage, cardiovascular and respiratory function, abdomen, reproductive history, diet, exercise, sleep, social environment, and household safety.
A Practical Daily Routine
Observe the lovebird before cleaning each morning. Note posture, breathing, activity, appetite, and overnight droppings. Offer measured balanced food and fresh water, provide vegetables, and create opportunities for flying, climbing, chewing, and foraging.
Include positive social interaction and training while also encouraging independent play. Remove spoiled fresh foods, inspect toys and rope, and provide a predictable quiet dark period at night.
Useful Lovebird Equipment
A well-prepared home includes a spacious horizontal cage with narrow bar spacing, natural perches of varied diameter, stainless or ceramic bowls, a precise gram scale, a secure small carrier, swings and climbing structures, destructible toys, foraging materials, and safe bathing opportunities.
What a Lovebird Does Not Need
A lovebird does not need a tiny decorative cage, an all-seed diet, digestive grit, unrestricted sunflower seeds, routine vitamin supplementation on top of a complete diet, sandpaper perch covers, automatic wing clipping, dark fabric huts, constant access to a nest box, or punishment-based training.
The Lovebird in Perspective
Lovebirds are not miniature passive parrots. They are energetic, assertive, socially complex birds that need room to fly, safe material to destroy, opportunities to forage, and predictable social relationships.
Successful care means balancing companionship with independence, recognizing that females may be strongly territorial, controlling reproductive stimulation, feeding for health rather than preference, and watching weight closely because a few grams matter. A well-managed lovebird can be an active, engaging companion for many years.
