Which Conure?

“Conure” does not describe a single species. It is a traditional avicultural term applied to dozens of long-tailed parrots from the Americas. Modern taxonomy distributes them among several genera, including Pyrrhura, Aratinga, Eupsittula, Psittacara, Thectocercus, Enicognathus, and Cyanoliseus. World Parrot Trust currently lists more than 50 species within its conure group.

This diversity matters. A 65-gram green-cheeked conure and a 300-gram Patagonian conure are both called conures, yet they differ substantially in body size, beak strength, enclosure needs, voice, and sometimes temperament. The common pet species also differ markedly in noise. Green-cheeked and related Pyrrhura conures are often quieter than sun, Jenday, Nanday, mitred, cherry-headed, and other larger conures, although no healthy conure should be expected to be silent.

Because of this variation, numerical recommendations in a general conure guide should be treated as starting points and adjusted to the species and individual bird.

What Wild Conures Teach Us About Pet Conures

Conures evolved as highly mobile flocking parrots. Depending on species, they occupy tropical forest, woodland, savanna, dry scrub, montane habitat, agricultural areas, and even temperate regions. Their wild diets vary with geography and season but can include fruits, flowers, buds, seeds, nuts, berries, plant material, and occasionally other foods.

The shared theme is movement. Wild conures fly, climb, investigate vegetation, manipulate foods with their beaks and feet, communicate continuously with flock members, and spend substantial time finding and processing food. Captive husbandry should therefore provide safe outlets for flight, chewing, climbing, social interaction, exploration, and foraging rather than treating the cage as a decorative container.

Choosing a Conure

A prospective owner should choose the species as carefully as the individual bird. Noise tolerance, available space, household schedule, other pets, neighbors, and the bird's expected lifespan all matter. A sun conure may be an affectionate and spectacular companion yet entirely unsuitable for an apartment with noise-sensitive neighbors. A green-cheeked conure may be comparatively quieter, but it is still an energetic parrot capable of screaming and biting.

A healthy conure should be alert, responsive, well balanced on the perch, and able to climb and fly or move normally. The eyes and nostrils should be clean, feathers should be orderly, breathing should be quiet at rest, and the vent area should be clean. Persistent fluffing, sitting on the cage floor, open-mouth breathing, pronounced tail movement with every breath, vomiting, or marked inactivity are reasons to postpone acquisition and obtain veterinary evaluation.

Avoid intentionally purchasing an unweaned baby as a bonding technique. Hand-feeding carries risks of aspiration, crop burns, crop stasis, microbial contamination, malnutrition, and developmental problems. A fully weaned, appropriately socialized bird can form an exceptionally strong relationship with a new owner.

Quarantine & New-Bird Examination

A newly acquired conure should initially be separated from established birds. A practical quarantine period is approximately 30–45 days, preferably in a separate room with separate food and water bowls, toys, cleaning equipment, and bathing supplies.

Arrange an avian veterinary examination early in quarantine. Testing should be individualized according to age, source, exposure history, clinical examination, reproductive plans, and the other birds in the household. Depending on circumstances, testing may include evaluation for Chlamydia psittaci, avian bornavirus, psittacine beak and feather disease virus, polyomavirus, or other agents. No single testing panel is appropriate for every bird.

The Conure Cage: A Home Base, Not the Whole World

Conures are active, long-tailed parrots and require far more than enough room to turn around on a perch. The enclosure should permit full wing extension, climbing, movement among multiple perches, use of toys without crowding, and protection of the tail from repeated contact with bars and furnishings.

For many small to medium conures, a cage around 36 inches long × 24 inches wide × 24 inches high should be viewed only as a practical starting minimum, not an ideal maximum. Larger species need proportionally larger enclosures. Whenever possible, choose greater horizontal space because parrots fly laterally. A tall narrow cage does not substitute for width.

Bar spacing should match the bird. Approximately 1/2 to 5/8 inch is suitable for many small Pyrrhura conures, while many larger conures can use approximately 5/8 to 3/4 inch spacing. The bird should never be able to force its head between the bars.

Secure doors are particularly important. Conures are skilled at manipulating latches, clips, bowl doors, and fasteners. Hardware must be bird-safe and free of exposed zinc, lead, sharp welds, or small removable parts.

Perches & Foot Health

Provide multiple perches of different diameters and textures. Natural branches are particularly useful because irregular surfaces vary pressure on the feet and provide opportunities for chewing. Choose only positively identified bird-safe wood that has not been treated with pesticides, preservatives, paint, or other chemicals.

Examples of commonly used safe woods include properly prepared apple, pear, willow, birch, ash, elm, maple, mulberry, and manzanita.

Do not rely on one smooth dowel. Sandpaper perch covers can abrade the plantar surface of the feet and should not be used. Concrete or mineral perches should not serve as the principal sleeping perch. Inspect rope perches frequently for frayed fibers that can entangle toes or legs.

Cage Placement & Clean Air

Conures usually do best where they can participate in household life while still having a secure retreat. A cage with one side near a wall can provide visual security. Avoid constant traffic, direct heating or air-conditioning vents, exterior doors with abrupt temperature changes, and kitchens.

Bird respiratory systems are exceptionally sensitive to airborne toxins. Avoid cigarette and marijuana smoke, vaping aerosols, incense, scented candles, aerosol cleaners, spray insecticides, paint and solvent fumes, essential-oil aerosols, carbon monoxide, and fumes from overheated PTFE or related nonstick coatings.

Good ventilation is essential, but a bird should not sit in a direct draft. A properly sized particulate air purifier can help control household dust and dander; avoid ozone-producing devices.

Temperature, Humidity, Light & Sleep

Healthy acclimated conures generally tolerate ordinary indoor temperatures well. Approximately 65–80°F (18–27°C) is a reasonable household range for most healthy birds, provided changes are gradual and extremes are avoided. Species from cooler regions may tolerate lower temperatures when properly acclimated, while sick, very young, geriatric, or debilitated birds may need a narrower comfort range.

Most companion conures do well with normal indoor humidity, regular bathing, and clean air. Extremely dry heated environments may contribute to skin and feather discomfort.

Provide a reliable day-night cycle and approximately 10–12 hours of quiet, uninterrupted darkness each night. Chronic long-day lighting can encourage reproductive behavior in some birds. A cage cover is optional if the room itself provides appropriate darkness and quiet; any cover must allow ventilation.

Safe direct sunlight can provide behavioral and physiologic benefits when overheating, predators, and escape are prevented. Window glass blocks most UVB. Properly positioned avian UV lighting can be considered for birds without safe natural sunlight, but it must be used according to manufacturer distance and replacement recommendations and does not replace balanced nutrition.

Bathing & Feather Care

Many conures love water. Some bathe enthusiastically in a wide shallow dish, others prefer a gentle mist, and some enjoy a supervised shower perch. Offer bathing opportunities regularly and let the bird reveal its preference. Plain water is all that is needed for routine feather care.

Allow the bird to dry in a comfortably warm, draft-free environment. Routine oils, coat sprays, perfumes, and human shampoos are unnecessary and may damage feathers or create inhalation risks.

Flight & Exercise

Conures are designed to fly. Daily flight in a secure bird-proofed area is the most natural exercise for a physically normal bird. Windows and mirrors should be made visible; ceiling fans must be off; doors and exterior windows secured; open water, hot surfaces, and predatory pets excluded.

A bird that cannot safely fly still needs extensive activity through climbing, play stands, ladders, training, swinging, and movement among feeding and foraging stations. Routine wing clipping is not required for a healthy companion conure and removes its most efficient natural form of exercise.

Nutrition: Moving Beyond the Seed Bowl

Conures may consume seeds in the wild, but an unrestricted bowl of commercial seed is not equivalent to a wild diet. Captive birds can selectively eat the highest-fat favored items while avoiding nutrients contained in less preferred foods. Seed-heavy diets are commonly deficient in vitamin A precursors, calcium, some amino acids, and other nutrients while being excessively energy dense.

A reputable, nutritionally complete formulated diet appropriate for the bird's size should provide the nutritional foundation. Current veterinary references do not establish one scientifically proven percentage for every conure species, so exact proportions should be individualized. A practical companion-bird plan is to make formulated food the dominant portion, offer varied vegetables daily, fruit in more modest amounts, and use seeds and nuts in controlled quantities rather than as unrestricted staples.

Useful vegetables include dark leafy greens, broccoli, bell pepper, carrot, squash, pumpkin, sweet potato, peas, green beans, herbs such as cilantro, and other safe vegetables. Fruit such as berries, papaya, mango, pomegranate, melon, pear, and seedless apple can provide variety but generally should not displace vegetables and formulated food.

Food can also be enrichment. Some portions should be offered in ways that require searching, climbing, manipulation, or problem-solving rather than appearing only in a bowl.

Converting a Seed-Dependent Conure to Better Nutrition

A bird that has eaten seed for years may not recognize pellets or other formulated foods as edible. Simply mixing pellets into an unlimited seed bowl often fails because the bird selectively removes the familiar seeds.

Never starve a conure into accepting a new diet. Sick, underweight, debilitated, or poorly eating birds should not undergo aggressive conversion without veterinary supervision.

Establish a Baseline

Before active conversion, obtain an accurate body weight on a digital gram scale and learn the bird's normal droppings. During active conversion, weigh the bird daily at approximately the same time. A progressive decline or loss approaching 10% of baseline weight, substantially reduced fecal volume, weakness, lethargy, or failure to eat requires stopping the process and obtaining veterinary guidance.

Make the New Food Easy to Recognize

Choose a pellet or crumble size the bird can manipulate comfortably. Put the new food in a familiar feeding position. Offer formulated food first in the morning when appetite is strongest, then provide the measured seed portion later after the bird has had an opportunity to explore the new diet.

Present pellets on a clean shallow plate or feeding platform as well as in a bowl. Conures often investigate foods that they can see and manipulate clearly. Crush a few familiar seed fragments over the pellets. A small amount of pellet crumble can be mixed with chopped vegetables so particles adhere to foods the bird already accepts.

Slightly moistening pellets with warm water can alter aroma and texture, but moistened food spoils rapidly and should generally be discarded within about 30–60 minutes, sooner in a warm environment.

Use Social Learning

Conures are observant flock animals. An owner can manipulate or pretend to eat a separate clean sample to create interest. Never offer food that has been in a human mouth because saliva can introduce inappropriate microorganisms.

Measure Rather Than Refill

Controlled portions allow the owner to know whether food is actually being consumed. Seed hulls can make a bowl look full even when most edible kernels are gone, while pulverized pellet material may look like consumption when the bird has merely shredded it. Observe the bird eating and follow weight and droppings rather than judging success by the bowl alone.

A Practical Conversion Sequence

  1. Introduction: offer formulated food every day in a familiar area while keeping the known diet available and establishing weight stability.
  2. Morning opportunity: once the bird is stable, offer formulated food alone for the first portion of the morning, then provide a measured amount of familiar seed.
  3. Gradual shift: as the bird is clearly swallowing the new food and maintaining weight and droppings, increase the formulated portion and reduce seed availability.
  4. Maintenance: continue to use measured high-value seeds and nuts for training and foraging while keeping balanced formulated food and vegetables as the dietary foundation.

Seeds, Nuts & Treats

Seeds and nuts are useful foods when used strategically. Small pieces of sunflower seed, safflower seed, millet, almond, walnut, or other safe high-value foods can be excellent training rewards. They are also useful in foraging toys where a small caloric reward encourages substantial activity.

The problem is not that seeds and nuts are inherently forbidden; it is that many pet conures will preferentially consume them in quantities that crowd out more balanced foods. Portion size should therefore reflect the bird's species, activity level, body condition, and total diet.

Calcium, Cuttlebone & Grit

Conures hull seeds and do not require insoluble digestive grit. Excessive grit ingestion can cause gastrointestinal problems.

A bird eating an appropriately formulated diet should already receive balanced calcium and vitamin D. Cuttlebone may still be offered as a chewable calcium source, particularly where recommended for a laying hen. Mount it with the soft, chalky surface facing into the cage. Additional calcium or vitamin supplementation should be individualized rather than added automatically, because excessive supplementation can also cause disease.

Foods to Avoid

Do not intentionally feed avocado, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, moldy foods, heavily salted foods, or unidentified plants. Remove fruit pits and potentially toxic seeds. Avoid concentrated onion or garlic products and unnecessary highly processed human foods. Fresh moist foods, sprouts, cooked grains, and soaked diets spoil quickly and should be removed promptly.

Water

Fresh clean water must be available at all times. Conures commonly dunk pellets, vegetables, toys, and other objects in their water, so dishes may need changing more than once daily. Wash bowls every day.

Routine vitamins in drinking water are generally unnecessary when the bird eats a balanced diet and can promote microbial growth or reduce water consumption by changing taste.

The Conure Mind

Conures are highly intelligent, intensely curious parrots. Many are acrobatic, manipulative, persistent problem-solvers and enthusiastic chewers. An environment that provides food and water but no choice or cognitive activity is incomplete husbandry.

A healthy daily routine should include opportunities for social interaction, flight or exercise, chewing, shredding, climbing, bathing, foraging, exploration, training, and independent play. Constant human contact is neither necessary nor desirable; the bird should also learn how to occupy itself safely.

Toys, Chewing & Bell Safety

Conures typically use the beak with extraordinary enthusiasm. Provide a rotating supply of bird-safe soft wood, paper, cardboard, palm leaf, untreated natural fibers, vegetable-tanned leather, foot toys, swings, climbing toys, and puzzle feeders. Larger conures require correspondingly stronger hardware.

Inspect toys frequently. Remove frayed rope, sharp wire, cracked plastic, open chain links capable of trapping toes, exposed fasteners, and openings capable of trapping the head or wing.

Conures are persistent engineers. If a component looks as though it may eventually come apart, assume the bird will test that possibility.

Foraging: Making Food an Activity

Foraging converts feeding from a passive event into physical and mental work. Begin with easy tasks: pellets under loose pieces of paper, a favorite seed wrapped loosely in clean paper, vegetables clipped at different cage locations, or treats placed in simple open puzzle cups.

Increase difficulty only after the bird understands the game. Foraging should occupy the bird without creating frustration or preventing adequate food intake.

Training: Communication Rather Than Control

Positive-reinforcement training is one of the most useful forms of enrichment a conure can receive. Birds can learn to step up, target, enter a carrier, stand on a gram scale, return to a cage, station on a perch, present a foot, and tolerate portions of a physical examination.

Use very small rewards so training does not add excessive calories. Millet fragments, tiny seed pieces, small nut fragments, praise, attention, or access to a favorite activity can all function as reinforcers.

Avoid punishment-based methods such as chasing, grabbing, yelling, spraying water, flicking the beak, or deliberately frightening the bird. These approaches may suppress behavior briefly while increasing fear and damaging trust.

Body Language & Biting

Conures communicate constantly through posture, feather position, eye activity, body orientation, beak position, movement, and vocalization. A relaxed bird may hold the body loosely, preen, grind the beak, or approach voluntarily. An aroused or defensive bird may lean away, slick the feathers tightly, flare the tail, pin or flash the pupils, open the beak, lunge, or vocalize sharply.

Do not interpret eye pinning alone as aggression; it can accompany excitement, play, interest, or territorial arousal. Read the entire bird and the context.

Biting is often communication that has escalated because earlier signals were missed. Common causes include fear, territoriality, reproductive behavior, overstimulation, frustration, guarding a favored person, insufficient sleep, or learned success at making people retreat.

Vocalization & Noise

Noise is one of the most important considerations before acquiring a conure. Many larger conures produce penetrating contact and alarm calls that can carry through walls and across considerable distances. Sun, Jenday, Nanday, mitred, red-masked, and similar conures are particularly capable of intense vocal output.

Many Pyrrhura conures, including green-cheeked conures, are quieter by comparison, but “quieter” does not mean quiet. They still contact-call, scream when excited, and can produce repeated sharp calls.

Do not try to eliminate normal vocal communication. Instead, reinforce acceptable sounds, teach a household contact whistle, provide adequate sleep and activity, and avoid accidentally rewarding screaming by rushing to the bird every time it calls loudly.

Social Needs: One Conure or More?

A single conure can thrive when it receives substantial daily interaction and has opportunities for independent activity. A second compatible conure may provide species-appropriate companionship, but pairing is not automatically beneficial. Birds may fail to get along, become intensely bonded and less interested in people, or become reproductively active.

Every new bird should be quarantined and introduced gradually in separate cages. Never assume that two parrots should share a cage simply because they are both conures. Size differences are important because a larger conure can seriously injure a smaller bird.

Petting & Hormonal Behavior

Head and neck scratching resembles social preening and is usually appropriate when solicited. Repeated petting along the back, beneath the wings, around the tail base, or over the lower body can mimic pair-bonding or sexual behavior and contribute to reproductive stimulation, regurgitation, territoriality, aggression, or chronic egg laying.

A trusted relationship should be built through training, shared activities, foraging, play, and appropriate social contact rather than continuous body stroking.

Dark huts, fabric tents, boxes, drawers, cabinets, spaces under furniture, and access beneath blankets can function as nest sites and may intensify hormonal behavior. They also create entanglement or ingestion hazards and generally should not be routine cage furnishings.

Sex Determination

Most commonly kept conures are sexually monomorphic or nearly so. Color, head shape, pelvic width, behavior, and intensity of bonding are not reliable methods of determining sex in an individual bird.

DNA sex testing is the practical noninvasive method when knowing sex is important. Endoscopic sexing can identify gonads directly but is invasive and is generally reserved for circumstances in which endoscopy is indicated for another reason or where additional reproductive information is needed.

Reproduction & Egg Laying

Female conures can lay eggs without a male. Although chronic egg laying is especially notorious in cockatiels, it can occur in conures and can lead to calcium depletion, osteoporosis, egg binding, cloacal or oviductal disease, and other reproductive problems.

Reduce inappropriate reproductive stimulation by maintaining a consistent dark period at night, removing nest-like cavities and tents, avoiding sexual body petting, providing substantial exercise and foraging, and avoiding unrestricted high-energy foods. A bird that repeatedly lays eggs deserves veterinary evaluation rather than indefinite calcium supplementation alone.

Breeding

Conures should not be bred merely because a pair produces eggs. Breeding birds should be mature, healthy, appropriately sexed, nutritionally prepared, and evaluated for relevant infectious disease and genetic concerns. Avoid deliberate hybridization between different conure species merely because they can reproduce.

Nest-box size, incubation period, clutch size, weaning age, and reproductive maturity vary by species, so breeding management should be species-specific rather than based on generic conure numbers.

Hand-feeding should not be undertaken casually. Incorrect formula temperature, consistency, feeding volume, hygiene, or technique can cause aspiration pneumonia, crop burns, crop stasis, infection, malnutrition, or death. Parent rearing with appropriate human socialization can produce excellent companion birds.

Molting & Feather Problems

Normal molt replaces worn feathers gradually. Growing pin feathers contain an active blood supply until maturation. A broken blood feather can bleed significantly; apply gentle direct pressure with clean gauze and seek veterinary care if bleeding does not stop promptly or the bird becomes weak.

Feather-damaging behavior should never automatically be labeled psychological. Medical possibilities include skin or follicular disease, parasites, infectious disease, malnutrition, liver disease, pain, reproductive disease, systemic illness, and environmental irritation. Behavioral contributors can include insufficient foraging, social stress, sleep disruption, anxiety, or lack of appropriate activity.

Important Infectious Diseases

Avian Chlamydiosis / Psittacosis

Chlamydia psittaci can cause illness in parrots and can infect people. Signs may include lethargy, poor appetite, weight loss, respiratory signs, ocular or nasal discharge, and abnormal green or yellow-green droppings, although some birds shed the organism with few signs. Suspected infection requires veterinary diagnosis, treatment, hygiene, and attention to human exposure.

Avian Bornavirus & Proventricular Dilatation Disease

Conures are among the psittacine birds in which avian bornavirus infection and proventricular dilatation disease can occur. Signs may include chronic weight loss, regurgitation, passage of undigested food, altered gastrointestinal motility, neurologic abnormalities, or combinations of these signs. Infection and clinical disease are not synonymous, so testing must be interpreted in clinical context.

Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease

Psittacine beak and feather disease virus can cause abnormal feather development, feather loss, immune dysfunction, and beak abnormalities. Young birds may be particularly vulnerable. Testing and interpretation should be individualized according to history and clinical findings.

Avian Polyomavirus

Polyomavirus is particularly important in young psittacine birds and breeding collections. Disease can be rapidly fatal in nestlings and recently weaned birds. Source, age, exposure risk, and breeding circumstances help determine whether testing or vaccination should be discussed with an avian veterinarian.

Aspergillosis

Aspergillus can cause respiratory disease, particularly when birds are exposed to heavy fungal contamination or have underlying stress, malnutrition, immunosuppression, or other disease. Moldy food and bedding should never be tolerated.

Nutrition-Related Disease

Seed-heavy diets can contribute to vitamin A deficiency, calcium imbalance, poor feather quality, obesity, hepatic disease, and reproductive problems. Obesity can occur even in active-looking parrots when calorie-dense foods are unrestricted.

Vitamin A deficiency affects epithelial tissues throughout the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and urinary systems and can impair immune function. The safest preventive strategy is balanced formulated nutrition plus carotenoid-rich vegetables rather than indiscriminate high-dose vitamin supplementation.

Heavy Metals & Household Hazards

Conures chew aggressively and may dismantle cage hardware, jewelry, curtain weights, stained-glass materials, old paint, fishing equipment, keys, toys, and household metal. Lead and zinc intoxication can cause weakness, regurgitation, abnormal droppings, excessive urination, neurologic signs, seizures, or sudden illness.

Other important household hazards include overheated nonstick cookware and appliances, ceiling fans, open doors and windows, electrical cords, hot stovetops, open flames, toilets, sinks, medications, cleaners, toxic plants, cats, dogs, and reclining furniture.

A bird bitten or scratched by a cat requires veterinary attention even when the wound appears insignificant.

Nails, Beak & Grooming

Normal chewing and use should maintain a healthy beak. Persistent overgrowth, asymmetry, softening, abnormal flaking, or deformity should prompt investigation for underlying disease rather than repeated cosmetic trimming alone.

Nails may require periodic trimming. Natural irregular perches help distribute wear but are not substitutes for monitoring. Avoid sandpaper perch sleeves.

Wing clipping should not be considered routine grooming. Flight feathers are functional anatomy. Any decision to alter flight ability should weigh the individual household hazards against consequences for exercise, coordination, confidence, and welfare.

Weight, Body Condition & Droppings

An accurate gram scale is one of the most useful pieces of equipment in a conure household. Establish the bird's normal healthy weight. Weekly weighing is reasonable for many healthy adults; daily weighing is useful during diet conversion, illness, medication, reproductive activity, or recovery.

Body condition matters as much as the number on the scale. A bird can lose pectoral muscle while remaining heavy because of obesity, organ enlargement, an egg, a mass, or fluid accumulation.

Normal droppings contain feces, urates, and urine. Vegetables and fruit may temporarily increase water content. Persistent changes deserve attention, especially markedly reduced fecal volume, blood, black tarry feces, undigested food, persistent diarrhea, dramatic polyuria, or very green scant droppings in a bird that has stopped eating.

Recognizing Illness

Parrots often conceal early illness. A conure can still perch, vocalize, or interact despite significant disease. Owners should therefore recognize subtle changes from that individual's normal routine.

Early warning signs may include sleeping more, reduced interest in people or toys, reluctance to fly, altered voice, decreased appetite, increased irritability, unusual clinginess, progressive weight loss, or changing droppings.

Prompt veterinary attention is appropriate for open-mouth or labored breathing, persistent tail bobbing, repeated vomiting, major appetite reduction, meaningful weight loss, bleeding, seizure activity, loss of balance, inability to perch, marked abdominal enlargement, repeated straining, suspected egg binding, significant trauma, predator contact, or possible toxin exposure.

Supportive Care While Seeking Veterinary Help

Keep a sick bird quiet and minimize unnecessary restraint. Comfortable supplemental warmth can benefit many sick birds when overheating is not suspected. Place food and water within easy reach. A severely weak bird may be safer in a small carrier or hospital-style enclosure with low perches or a padded floor.

Do not syringe-feed water or formula into a weak or dyspneic bird unless specifically instructed by a veterinarian because aspiration can be fatal. Do not administer leftover antibiotics, human medications, or antiparasitic drugs based only on symptoms.

Transport & Carrier Training

Teach carrier entry before an emergency. Leave the carrier visible periodically, place favored rewards inside, and reinforce approaching, entering, and remaining calmly. This turns veterinary transport into a trained behavior rather than a chase.

The carrier should be secure, well ventilated, appropriately sized, and free of loose hardware. Stable birds can travel with a low secure perch; weak or neurologically abnormal birds may be safer without one.

Preventive Veterinary Care

A new conure should receive a comprehensive avian examination soon after acquisition and at least annually thereafter. Preventive visits should assess body weight and condition, diet, beak and oral cavity, eyes and nares, respiratory function, feathers and skin, feet, musculoskeletal condition, reproductive history, behavior, sleep, exercise, and environmental safety.

Laboratory testing should be selected according to age, source, exposure, species, reproductive plans, household bird population, and examination findings rather than automatically applying the same panel to every bird.

The Older Conure

Many conures live for decades. As they age, arthritis, cataracts, liver disease, renal disease, cardiovascular disease, endocrine or reproductive disorders, and neoplasia become more important.

Modify the environment when needed. Provide easy routes between food, water, and preferred resting areas; add stable platform perches for birds with painful feet or joints; reduce dangerous climbing distances; and keep important resources accessible.

Reduced movement, weight change, altered posture, increased sleeping, or declining flight ability should not automatically be dismissed as normal aging.

A Practical Daily Routine

Good care depends on repeated observation. Each morning, notice where the bird is perched, whether it is alert, and whether overnight droppings appear normal. Provide fresh water and balanced food. Offer vegetables and remove them before spoilage.

Allow daily flight or vigorous exercise. Provide something safe to chew or destroy, at least one opportunity to forage, and meaningful social interaction or training. Also allow periods of independent play.

At night, remove perishable food and provide a predictable quiet dark period. An owner who knows the bird's normal voice, appetite, activity, weight, and droppings is far more likely to recognize illness early.

Useful Conure Equipment

  • a spacious species-appropriate bird-safe cage;
  • natural perches of varied diameters;
  • a play stand or safe exercise area;
  • stainless-steel or easily disinfected food and water bowls;
  • a digital gram scale;
  • a secure carrier;
  • bathing options;
  • safe chewing and shredding toys;
  • clapperless bird-safe bells if bells are offered;
  • foraging toys and materials;
  • a timer for consistent lighting where useful;
  • and an appropriately sized particulate air purifier when household conditions warrant one.

What a Conure Does Not Need

A healthy conure does not need an all-seed diet, unrestricted sunflower seed, digestive grit, constant vitamin supplementation, prophylactic antibiotics or antiparasitic drugs without an indication, routine wing clipping, sandpaper perch covers, mirrors as a substitute for social interaction, dark fabric huts, or toys with accessible loose bell clappers.

It does not need continuous physical contact or full-body petting. It does not need every problem solved with another product. Space, clean air, balanced nutrition, sleep, flight and exercise, chewing, foraging, positive social interaction, training, and preventive veterinary care are more important.

The Conure in Perspective

Conures are sometimes described as “big parrots in small bodies,” and the phrase persists because it captures something real. Their size may be modest, but their activity, intelligence, social demands, beak use, vocal communication, and ability to shape a household are not.

The group is also extraordinarily diverse. A green-cheeked conure may be a relatively quiet 70-gram acrobat that wants to disappear into a shirt sleeve, while a Patagonian conure may weigh several times as much and announce itself across a neighborhood. Sun and Jenday conures combine spectacular color with voices that can surprise people who chose them primarily for appearance. Blue-crowned conures may be less visually flamboyant yet are often valued for social intelligence and vocal mimicry.

The best conure home does not try to suppress the qualities that make these birds conures. It gives those qualities safe direction: wings are used for exercise, the beak for appropriate destruction, curiosity for foraging, intelligence for training, and flock behavior for healthy social relationships.

When those needs are met, a conure can be an exceptionally engaging companion—comic, athletic, affectionate, demanding, inventive, and capable of a relationship that may last for decades.
