Cockatoo Care Guide
A comprehensive husbandry and preventive-care guide for companion cockatoos, including species differences, large-parrot housing, powder-down management, balanced nutrition, independence and social behavior, reproductive management, feather health, enrichment, positive-reinforcement training, and lifelong veterinary care.
Cockatoos are among the most socially intense, physically powerful, and behaviorally demanding parrots kept as companions. Their expressive crests, dramatic body language, affection toward familiar people, and extraordinary capacity for play make them compelling birds. Those same characteristics can become serious welfare and safety problems when a cockatoo is kept in an environment that encourages constant human dependence, insufficient exercise, excessive reproductive bonding, or inadequate opportunity to chew, forage, bathe lightly, and occupy itself independently.
The cockatoo family, Cacatuidae, includes more than twenty living species from Australia, New Guinea, Indonesia, the Philippines, and nearby islands. Companion birds range from relatively small Goffin’s Cockatoos and Galahs to large Sulphur-crested, Umbrella, Moluccan, and Black Cockatoos. Their sizes, diets, natural activity patterns, social organization, and conservation status vary enough that no single cage dimension, food quantity, or perch diameter fits every cockatoo.
Cockatoos also differ from many other parrots in several clinically important ways. White cockatoos and related species produce conspicuous powder down. Feather-destructive behavior and self-trauma are especially important in the group. Adult cockatoos—particularly strongly human-bonded Umbrella and Moluccan Cockatoos—have a characteristic association with cloacal prolapse. Psittacine beak and feather disease was first recognized in cockatoos and remains an important differential diagnosis in young birds or any cockatoo with abnormal feather growth.
Good cockatoo care therefore requires more than a large cage and frequent petting. It requires carefully managed social relationships, strong but safe housing, extensive daily activity, destructible enrichment, foraging, positive-reinforcement training, balanced nutrition matched to the species and body condition, protected sleep, excellent air quality, and preventive veterinary care throughout a lifespan that may extend for many decades.

Which Cockatoo?
Knowing the exact species is important. The term “cockatoo” includes birds whose normal adult weights differ by several hundred grams and whose natural diets and activity patterns are not identical. Scientific names are useful because common names can vary between aviculture, conservation literature, and different countries.
Umbrella / White-crested Cockatoo — Cacatua alba
The Umbrella Cockatoo is a large white Indonesian cockatoo, approximately 46 cm (18 in) and around 550 g in many adults. The broad white crest rises dramatically when the bird is excited, alarmed, curious, or socially aroused. Umbrellas are famous for intense physical affection and are frequently described as “Velcro birds.” That description should be treated as a warning as much as an endearing trait. Constant cuddling can encourage dependence, sexual pair bonding, screaming when separated, reproductive over-stimulation, and long-term behavior problems.
Moluccan / Salmon-crested Cockatoo — Cacatua moluccensis
The Moluccan is one of the largest commonly kept white cockatoos, approximately 40–50 cm (15.6–19.5 in) and often about 775–935 g. Its plumage has a soft salmon or peach cast and the erectile crest reveals much deeper salmon coloration. Moluccans have exceptionally powerful voices and beaks and require very large, strongly constructed housing. Their social intensity and susceptibility to feather destruction and self-trauma make early independence training especially important.
Sulphur-crested Cockatoo — Cacatua galerita
The Sulphur-crested Cockatoo is a large Australian and New Guinean species. The nominate form may reach approximately 50 cm (19.5 in) and 815–975 g, although several subspecies are smaller. The bright yellow crest contrasts with predominantly white plumage. These birds are athletic, intelligent, exceptionally destructive when under-enriched, and capable of strong seasonal behavior. They need substantial flight or climbing exercise and large quantities of safe wood and other material to dismantle.
Yellow-crested and Citron-crested Cockatoos — Cacatua sulphurea and Cacatua citrinocristata
These smaller Indonesian white cockatoos are approximately 33 cm (12.8 in) and around 300–380 g. Yellow-crested birds carry a yellow crest; the Citron-crested has a more orange-citron crest. They require the same behavioral sophistication as larger cockatoos even though they need less physical space and smaller equipment. Conservation and legal provenance are especially important because wild populations of several Indonesian cockatoos have been severely affected by habitat loss and trapping.
Goffin’s Cockatoo / Tanimbar Corella — Cacatua goffiniana
Goffin’s Cockatoos are small white cockatoos, approximately 32 cm (12.5 in) and around 300 g. They are exceptional manipulators and problem solvers. Their smaller body size does not make them easy birds. They may open latches, dismantle toys, explore tiny openings, and require frequent changes in foraging and mechanical enrichment. Their cage can be smaller than that of a Moluccan, but security and cognitive complexity are just as important.
Galah / Rose-breasted Cockatoo — Eolophus roseicapilla
The Galah is approximately 35 cm (13.6 in) and generally 270–400 g. Its pink body and grey wings make it easily recognizable. Galahs evolved in open Australian landscapes and spend substantial time moving and foraging on or near the ground. In captivity they are specifically recognized as obesity-prone. A seed-heavy ration, free-choice nuts, and limited flight can produce marked excess body fat. Galahs benefit from careful calorie control, abundant flight and climbing opportunities, and foraging that makes them work for a meaningful portion of their daily ration.
Little / Bare-eyed Corella — Cacatua sanguinea
Little Corellas are about 38 cm (14.8 in) and roughly 350–530 g. Their bare bluish eye ring, small crest, and pale pink-orange facial feather bases distinguish them from many white cockatoos. They are active, social, and strong ground foragers. Like other cockatoos, they need vigorous exercise and destructible materials rather than a sedentary cage life.
Slender-billed / Long-billed Corella — Cacatua tenuirostris
This Australian corella is approximately 37 cm (14.4 in) and 485–650 g, with an elongated upper mandible adapted in part to digging and extracting underground foods. Captive enrichment should take advantage of that natural manipulation by providing safe digging, shredding, and ground-foraging opportunities. The long bill should not be treated as abnormal simply because it differs from the shorter beak of an Umbrella or Goffin’s Cockatoo.
Pink / Major Mitchell’s Cockatoo — Cacatua leadbeateri
Pink Cockatoos are medium-sized Australian cockatoos with pale pink plumage and a striking multicolored crest. They are less commonly kept than Galahs or white cockatoos and should not be assumed to have the same behavioral tolerance of close handling. Species-specific natural history, lower-energy feeding, and access to exercise are important.
Palm and Black Cockatoos
Palm Cockatoos and the Australian Black Cockatoos are specialized birds and are comparatively uncommon in ordinary companion homes. Their natural diets can include relatively energy-dense nuts and seeds, and their body size, beak strength, aviary requirements, breeding biology, and nutritional needs differ from the common white cockatoos and Galahs. A generic “cockatoo diet” should not be imposed on these species without guidance from an avian veterinarian and experienced species-specific aviculturist.
What Wild Cockatoos Teach Us
Wild cockatoos are highly active. Depending on species, they may fly substantial distances, forage in trees or on the ground, peel bark, excavate plant material, manipulate seed heads, dig for roots and tubers, tear apart wood, and maintain constant social contact with mates or flocks. Captivity removes most of that work unless it is intentionally restored.
A cockatoo given unrestricted food beside a favorite perch may obtain its daily calories in minutes and then face many hours with little meaningful activity. The resulting combination of physical inactivity and intense human dependency is one of the central problems of captive cockatoo husbandry.
Choosing a Healthy Cockatoo
Observe a prospective bird before anyone handles it. A healthy cockatoo should be alert, coordinated, interested in its environment, and able to grip and move normally. Breathing should be quiet at rest. The eyes and nostrils should be clean, and the feathers should be reasonably smooth and organized.
Cockatoos normally produce powder down. In a species that should be powdery, an unexpectedly greasy appearance or marked absence of powder—especially when combined with abnormal emerging feathers—deserves veterinary investigation.
Do not select a bird solely because it appears unusually cuddly. A young hand-raised cockatoo that wants continuous body contact may be appealing but can develop serious dependency when that pattern is reinforced for years. Choose for health, resilience, curiosity, ability to self-entertain, and willingness to interact without needing constant physical contact.
An unweaned baby should not be purchased simply so the owner can finish hand-feeding. Delayed or inappropriate weaning is particularly concerning in cockatoos because prolonged parent-like feeding relationships can contribute to abnormal human bonding as well as the usual medical risks of aspiration, crop burns, crop stasis, infection, and malnutrition.
Quarantine and the First Veterinary Visit
A newly acquired cockatoo should receive an examination by a veterinarian experienced in avian medicine soon after acquisition. If other birds are present, quarantine should ideally occur in a separate room for approximately 30–45 days, using separate dishes, toys, cleaning equipment, and bathing supplies.
Testing should be individualized according to age, source, previous flock exposure, clinical findings, and intended contact with other birds. Psittacine beak and feather disease deserves particular attention in young cockatoos or birds with abnormal feathers. Chlamydia psittaci, polyomavirus, avian bornavirus, and other diagnostics may also be appropriate depending on history.
The Cockatoo Cage: Strong, Large, and Functional
Cockatoos need exceptionally strong cages. They use their beaks as tools and can loosen screws, open poorly designed doors, bend light hardware, and destroy cage furnishings.
For large Umbrella, Moluccan, and Sulphur-crested Cockatoos, a cage in the range of 48 × 36 × 60 inches (122 × 91 × 152 cm) or larger is a reasonable practical starting point when the bird also receives substantial daily activity outside the cage. More space is better, and indoor aviaries or large walk-in enclosures provide a major welfare advantage.
Smaller Goffin’s, Citron/Yellow-crested Cockatoos, and Galahs may use somewhat smaller cages, but the bird must still be able to fully extend both wings, climb, turn, manipulate toys, and move between functional areas without colliding with furnishings. Long horizontal space is more valuable than simply adding height.
Bar spacing and strength must be matched to species. Smaller cockatoos may need spacing near 1/2–3/4 inch, while large birds often use approximately 3/4–1 inch or more depending on cage design. The safest cage prevents the bird from placing its head between bars while remaining robust enough to withstand repeated chewing.
Furnishing Without Filling the Cage
A cockatoo cage should provide several different perch types, separate feeding and drinking stations, robust chewing material, climbing routes, and multiple foraging opportunities while preserving open space. A cage crowded with toys can reduce usable movement and create entrapment hazards.
Rotate enrichment rather than presenting everything at once. Some cockatoos enjoy novelty immediately; others need new items introduced outside the cage before accepting them. The environment should change enough to remain interesting without becoming unpredictable or frightening.
Perches and Foot Health
Natural branches of varied diameter are especially valuable for cockatoos because these heavy, strong-footed parrots can spend long periods perched. A uniform dowel places pressure on the same foot surfaces continuously.
Appropriately prepared apple, pear, willow, birch, ash, elm, maple, mulberry, manzanita, and other established bird-safe branches may be used when correctly identified and free from pesticides, mold, roadside contamination, and chemical treatments.
Rope perches can provide useful variation but should be inspected frequently for fraying. Sandpaper perch covers should not be used. Abrasive concrete or mineral perches should not serve as the main sleeping perch.
Pododermatitis, Arthritis, and Mobility
Heavy cockatoos that spend too much time on a few fixed perches may develop pressure-related foot disease. Obesity, arthritis, previous injuries, and poor perch design increase the risk.
Red or shiny plantar skin, callus formation, ulceration, swelling, reluctance to grip, or persistent favoring of one foot warrants veterinary evaluation. Management often requires changing perch surfaces and diameters, improving body condition, increasing safe movement, and treating infection or inflammation when present.
Cage Placement
Cockatoos need social access without being placed in the center of constant chaos. Position the cage where the bird can observe household activity while having one or more visually protected sides and a predictable resting area.
Avoid kitchens, heating or air-conditioning drafts, uncontrolled direct sun, busy doorways, and locations where dogs, cats, or children can reach the cage unsupervised.
Powder Down and Air Quality
Many cockatoos, particularly white cockatoos, continuously produce substantial powder down. Fine keratin particles settle on furniture and circulate in household air. This is normal, but accumulation can be considerable.
Regular cage cleaning, vacuuming, ventilation, and a properly sized HEPA-type particulate air purifier can significantly reduce airborne dust. Ozone-producing air cleaners should not be used.
Powder has implications beyond housekeeping. People with asthma or airborne allergies may find a cockatoo difficult to tolerate. Other birds with sensitive respiratory systems may also be adversely affected by heavy powder accumulation in poorly ventilated multi-bird rooms.
Smoke, vaping aerosols, scented candles, incense, aerosol cleaners, essential-oil aerosols, paint or solvent fumes, and fumes from overheated nonstick cookware or appliances should be avoided.
Temperature and Humidity
Healthy acclimated cockatoos generally tolerate ordinary comfortable household temperatures. Approximately 65–80°F (18–27°C) is reasonable for many healthy companion birds when changes are gradual.
Moderate household humidity is usually adequate. Species from different regions should not all be forced into one humidity target; clean air, reasonable ventilation, and avoidance of extreme dryness or damp mold-prone conditions are more important.
Light, Sleep, and Biological Rhythm
Most cockatoos benefit from approximately 10–12 hours of quiet darkness every night. This matters not only for rest but also for reproductive management and behavioral stability.
A bird that remains beside television, conversation, and household lighting late into the night may not receive a biologically meaningful night even if a cover is draped over the cage. A separate quiet sleep location can be useful in active households.
Natural Light and UV
Safe unfiltered outdoor light provides useful environmental and physiologic cues when escape, predators, temperature, and outdoor hazards are controlled. Window glass blocks most biologically useful UVB.
Avian-specific UV lighting may be considered for birds with little safe natural-light exposure. Follow manufacturer instructions regarding distance, exposure, lamp replacement, and shielding, and always allow the bird to move away from the light. UV does not substitute for balanced nutrition.
Bathing and Powder-Down Care
Cockatoos benefit from regular opportunities for feather maintenance, but their powder-down plumage should not be repeatedly soaked in an attempt to remove the powder. The powder is a normal and important component of feather and skin maintenance.
Many cockatoos enjoy a gentle mist, a light shower, wet leafy greens, or a shallow bathing opportunity. More thorough soaking can be offered occasionally if the bird enjoys it, but frequent drenching is unnecessary. Bathing should complement—not eliminate—normal powder production.
Exercise, Flight, and Wing Management
Flight provides cardiovascular exercise, muscle conditioning, coordination, balance, and behavioral choice. Large cockatoos are powerful but often surprisingly agile fliers; Galahs and Corellas are particularly adapted to sustained movement in open landscapes.
When a safe flight environment can be provided, preserving flight offers substantial welfare and health benefits. Secure doors and windows, turn off ceiling fans, make glass surfaces visible, exclude predatory pets, close toilets and deep water, and remove hot surfaces and toxic materials.
Wing clipping should not be automatic. In homes where safe flight cannot be reliably provided and uncontrolled flight creates a genuine risk of escape, collision, burns, or access to dangerous areas, a carefully planned conservative trim may be reasonable.
The goal should be controlled reduction, not a bird that falls heavily. Excessive clipping increases the risk of keel and leg injury, reduces exercise, and can undermine confidence. A clipped cockatoo may still escape outdoors, so wing trimming never replaces secure doors, carriers, harness training, or screened outdoor enclosures.
Nutrition: Match Calories to the Cockatoo
For most commonly kept white cockatoos, Corellas, and Galahs, a nutritionally complete formulated parrot diet should provide the foundation of the ration. Seed-heavy diets are typically high in fat and deficient in key vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. They contribute to obesity, vitamin A deficiency, reproductive disease, poor feather quality, and other chronic problems.
For many healthy companion white cockatoos and Corellas, a practical starting framework is approximately 60–70% nutritionally complete formulated food, 20–30% vegetables and leafy greens, about 5–10% fruit, and approximately 5–10% combined nuts, seeds, and other high-value foods. These are approximate proportions, not rigid formulas.
Galahs and other obesity-prone or sedentary cockatoos may benefit from a somewhat leaner pattern, such as roughly 65–75% complete formulated food, 20–30% vegetables/greens, about 5% fruit, and approximately 5% nuts and seeds, with total quantity adjusted to maintain lean body condition.
Palm Cockatoos and some Black Cockatoos require a more energy- and fat-rich plan than Galahs and most white cockatoos. A useful starting framework for a healthy, active Palm Cockatoo is approximately 45–55% complete formulated large-parrot diet, 25–35% mixed nuts and seeds—emphasizing fresh walnuts, almonds, pine nuts, and other quality tree nuts—10–20% vegetables and greens, and about 5–10% fruit. Exact proportions should be adjusted to weight, body condition, activity, reproductive status, and the particular formulated diet being used.
Vegetables should generally be emphasized over fruit. Dark leafy greens, broccoli, bok choy, peppers, carrots, pumpkin, winter squash, sweet potato, green beans, peas, and similar foods provide useful variety. Fruit can be offered in modest amounts.
Portion Control and Body Condition
A perpetually full bowl makes it difficult to know what a cockatoo actually consumes. Measured feeding allows owners to detect appetite changes and limits selective consumption of high-calorie items.
The correct gram amount depends on species, body weight, activity, reproductive status, age, and food energy density. The goal is not to make the bird finish an arbitrary portion; it is to maintain appropriate pectoral muscle mass with minimal excess fat.
Galahs deserve particular attention because obesity is a recognized problem in the species. A bird that is heavy but poorly muscled is not fit.
Converting a Seed-Dependent Cockatoo
Never starve a cockatoo into accepting pellets. Begin with an accurate baseline weight and become familiar with the bird’s normal droppings. During active diet conversion, daily weighing at approximately the same time is advisable.
A persistent downward trend, substantial reduction in fecal output, weakness, or weight loss approaching approximately 10% of baseline should prompt reassessment and veterinary guidance.
Offer formulated food in familiar feeding locations and use morning appetite without prolonged food deprivation. Cockatoos frequently respond well to social demonstration, positive-reinforcement training, and foraging. Pellets can be offered on flat surfaces, incorporated into puzzle feeders, mixed with chopped vegetables, or used as rewards for investigation.
Seeds, Nuts, and High-Value Foods
Seeds and nuts are useful foods, especially for training and foraging, but in most companion cockatoos they should be controlled rather than offered free choice.
A tiny almond or walnut fragment may be enough to reinforce a behavior. Large whole nuts supplied repeatedly during training can add substantial calories before an owner realizes how much fat the bird has consumed.
Peanuts and other stored foods should be fresh, dry, and free of mold or rancidity. Any food with suspicious odor, dampness, or visible contamination should be discarded.
Vitamin A and Seed-Heavy Diets
Vitamin A is important for normal immune function, reproduction, vision, and the health of epithelial tissues lining the mouth, choana, sinuses, respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, urinary tract, and reproductive tract. Cockatoos maintained primarily on commercial seed mixtures are at risk for deficiency because these diets are typically low in vitamin A and its precursors as well as several other essential nutrients.
Chronic deficiency can contribute to blunting or loss of normal choanal papillae, abnormal oral tissues, recurrent rhinitis or sinusitis, secondary respiratory infections, poor feather quality, abnormal skin and foot keratinization, and reproductive disease. Prevention is best accomplished with a nutritionally complete formulated diet supplemented with carotenoid-rich vegetables such as dark leafy greens, broccoli, red or orange peppers, carrots, pumpkin, and sweet potato. Routine high-dose vitamin A supplementation is not appropriate in birds already receiving a complete diet.
Water and Grit
Fresh water should always be available. Cockatoos may dunk food or toys, so bowls often need changing more than once daily.
Cockatoos hull seeds before ingestion and do not require digestive grit. Excessive grit consumption can cause gastrointestinal impaction.
Foods and Substances to Avoid
Avocado, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, heavily salted foods, moldy foods, unsafe fruit pits or seeds, and unidentified plant material should not be intentionally offered. Highly processed high-fat or high-sugar human foods should not become routine.
Vitamin, mineral, calcium, amino-acid, or other supplements should not automatically be added to a complete diet unless there is a specific nutritional or medical indication.
The Cockatoo Mind
Cockatoos are intelligent problem solvers, but much of their companion-bird challenge comes from the combination of intelligence with exceptional social motivation. Many learn very quickly which behaviors bring a person closer, make a person retreat, or generate a dramatic reaction.
A young cockatoo carried constantly around the home may learn that independent play is unnecessary. Years later, normal human absence can produce persistent screaming or distress. Independence should therefore be taught from the beginning, not after a behavior problem develops.
Teaching Independence Without Social Deprivation
Independence does not mean ignoring a cockatoo. It means creating a bird that can enjoy human interaction without requiring continuous physical contact.
Provide predictable periods of social activity along with equally normal periods of independent foraging, chewing, light bathing, resting, and play. Reinforce calm behavior when the person is nearby but not touching the bird. Teach stationing on a play stand and reinforce remaining occupied while household members move around the room.
A healthy relationship allows the bird to be social without making one person responsible for regulating every moment of its emotional state.
Petting, Cuddling, and Sexual Signals
Head and neck scratching resembles normal social preening and is generally appropriate when requested.
Repeated stroking over the back, rump, under the wings, abdomen, or tail base can mimic sexual contact. Cuddling the bird against the body, allowing it inside clothing, or providing dark nest-like spaces can intensify pair bonding and reproductive behavior.
This issue is particularly important in cockatoos because extreme human attachment has been associated with screaming, feather destruction, reproductive problems, and cloacal prolapse.
Reproductive Behavior
Stable household temperatures, prolonged artificial lighting, abundant calorie-rich food, body petting, dark cavities, and intense human pair bonds can create reproductive stimulation outside the bird’s normal seasonal cycle.
Signs can include regurgitation, masturbation, nest seeking, guarding dark spaces, territorial aggression, increased screaming, feather damaging, egg laying, or persistent cloacal straining.
Management usually includes protecting a long dark night period, reducing nest-like opportunities, avoiding sexual body touching, controlling high-calorie foods, increasing exercise and foraging, and changing patterns that cause the bird to interpret a person as a mate.
Cloacal Prolapse: A Particularly Important Cockatoo Problem
Cloacal prolapse can occur in many birds, but adult cockatoos—especially Umbrella and Moluccan Cockatoos—have a distinctive behavioral association with the disorder. Many affected birds have histories of hand rearing, delayed weaning, persistent begging, an unusually intense attachment to one person, parent-like or mate-like interactions, and prolonged withholding of droppings.
Owners should not train a cockatoo to hold feces for long periods merely so the bird will defecate only on command or only in a designated place. Normal elimination should not become socially restricted.
Screaming and Contact Calling
Cockatoos are naturally loud. A Moluccan or Sulphur-crested Cockatoo can produce calls that are inappropriate for many apartments and shared-wall homes even when behaviorally normal.
Screaming becomes a behavior problem when vocalization is excessive, repetitive, or tightly linked to human separation or attention. Owners can inadvertently strengthen it by rushing back to the room, shouting, or otherwise providing a powerful consequence every time the bird calls.
The goal is not silence. Appropriate management reinforces quieter contact calls and independent activity, provides predictable social periods, increases foraging and exercise, and avoids creating a pattern in which the bird receives its most intense human interaction only after screaming.
Crest and Body Language
The erectile crest is a communication structure, not a simple “happy meter.” A raised crest can accompany curiosity, play, alarm, excitement, aggression, or reproductive arousal.
Interpret the whole bird. Eye position, pupil changes, feather elevation, wing posture, beak position, body lean, tail movement, vocalization, and context matter. A highly aroused cockatoo should be given space rather than challenged to step up simply to prove control.
Chewing and Destruction
Destruction is normal cockatoo behavior. Large white cockatoos can reduce substantial wood to chips in a short period. A home that does not provide legal destruction will eventually provide illegal destruction in the form of furniture, doors, trim, cabinets, books, and electrical cords.
Bird-safe wood, untreated cardboard, paper, palm products, vegetable-tanned leather, thick paperboard, and appropriately sized parrot toys should be available routinely.
Fresh foods can also become destructible enrichment. Whole broccoli florets, broccoli stalks, cauliflower, leafy greens, peppers, corn husks, and other safe vegetables can be clipped or skewered so the bird must manipulate them.
Clean untreated pinecones from a known pesticide-free area can be useful for chewing or foraging when they are free of visible mold, sap contamination, insects, and environmental pollutants and have been thoroughly cleaned and dried.
Foraging
Part of the daily ration should require work. Begin with easy, visible food-finding tasks and gradually introduce wrapped foods, cardboard parcels, drawers, puzzle feeders, hanging skewers, or food hidden among clean paper and destructible materials.
Foraging is especially useful because it occupies the beak and brain while reducing the time available for screaming, repetitive behavior, or feather manipulation.
Toy and Bell Safety
Cockatoos can dismantle hardware that would be secure for smaller parrots. Inspect toys for loose screws, open chain links, frayed fibers, exposed wire, sharp edges, corrosion, and openings capable of trapping the head, neck, wing, or foot.
Positive-Reinforcement Training and Cooperative Care
Training is essential management for a cockatoo, not a luxury. Useful behaviors include step-up to hand or perch, targeting, stationing, voluntary carrier entry, scale training, recall, returning to the cage, presenting feet, accepting towel or carrier desensitization, and voluntarily participating in simple medical procedures.
Station training is especially valuable for a bird that becomes possessive of the cage or one family member. It allows the bird to move away from a doorway or feeding station without confrontation.
Chasing, spraying water as punishment, striking the beak, yelling, and deliberate intimidation damage trust and often escalate aggression.
Social Needs and Multiple Caregivers
Cockatoos need social contact but benefit from learning that social life includes more than one person and more than physical touching. Several household members should participate in calm positive activities when practical.
A bird should not be forced to accept handling from someone it fears. The goal is behavioral flexibility: more than one person can offer food, reinforce training, open the cage, or interact safely.
Feather-Destructive Behavior and Self-Mutilation
Cockatoos are among the parrots most strongly associated with feather-destructive behavior, and some progress beyond feather damage to severe skin mutilation. These cases should never be dismissed as “boredom.”
Medical causes and contributors include nutritional disease, pain, dermatologic or follicular disease, infection, toxin exposure, systemic illness, reproductive disease, abnormal feather development, and other physical problems. Behavioral and environmental contributors may include sleep disruption, social isolation, excessive pair bonding, sexual frustration, loss of a favored person, unpredictable reinforcement, insufficient foraging, limited exercise, inadequate chewing opportunity, or chronic environmental frustration.
A veterinary work-up should precede the assumption of a purely behavioral cause. Even when a medical trigger is corrected, the behavior may persist as a learned or compulsive pattern and require long-term behavioral management.
Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease
Psittacine beak and feather disease is caused by circovirus and was first recognized in cockatoos with classic feather and beak abnormalities. Modern screening has reduced its prevalence in many captive-bred populations, but it remains an important disease, particularly in younger parrots.
Abnormal emerging feathers, retained or malformed pin feathers, unusual feather breakage, progressive loss of powder down, beak abnormalities, and recurrent infections should prompt diagnostic investigation. The virus is environmentally stable and can spread through feather dust, dander, feces, oral secretions, and contaminated objects, making quarantine and testing important.
Obesity and the Galah
Obesity can occur in any sedentary cockatoo, but Galahs are specifically recognized as high-risk birds. A seed-rich diet can provide far more energy than a captive bird expends.
Excess body fat contributes to arthritis, pododermatitis, fatty liver disease, cardiovascular disease, respiratory compromise, and reduced exercise tolerance. Measured feeding and regular gram-scale weights should be routine, not reserved for visibly fat birds.
Weight must be interpreted with pectoral muscle and fat stores. A bird can lose muscle while remaining overweight.
Hepatic and Metabolic Disease
Chronic overnutrition and high-fat diets can contribute to hepatic lipidosis and other metabolic disease. Early signs may be nonspecific: reduced activity, weight change, abnormal feather quality, altered droppings, or abnormal blood chemistry.
Prevention is based on maintaining lean body condition, feeding a complete diet, controlling calorie-dense treats, and preserving daily physical activity.
Respiratory Disease
A healthy cockatoo should breathe quietly at rest. Open-mouth breathing, persistent tail bobbing, clicking or wheezing, voice change, nasal discharge, reduced stamina, or obvious respiratory effort should be investigated promptly.
Possible causes include bacterial, fungal, chlamydial, nutritional, toxic, cardiovascular, and neoplastic disease. A bird in marked respiratory distress should be handled minimally because restraint increases oxygen demand.
Avian Chlamydiosis / Psittacosis
Chlamydia psittaci can infect cockatoos and people. Birds may show lethargy, weight loss, respiratory or ocular disease, and abnormal droppings, but some infected birds have subtle signs.
Because the disease is zoonotic, suspected infection requires appropriate veterinary diagnosis, treatment, hygiene, and attention to human exposure.
Avian Bornavirus and PDD
Avian bornavirus infection is associated with avian ganglioneuritis and proventricular dilatation disease in parrots. Possible signs include chronic weight loss, regurgitation, abnormal gastrointestinal motility, undigested food in droppings, weakness, or neurologic abnormalities.
Infection and clinical disease are not identical, so testing must be interpreted in conjunction with history and clinical findings.
Heavy-Metal Toxicosis
Cockatoos use powerful beaks to investigate metal objects and may ingest fragments from cage hardware, jewelry, curtain weights, old paint, stained-glass materials, fishing equipment, or household hardware.
Lead and zinc exposure can produce gastrointestinal, renal, and neurologic signs including weakness, regurgitation, abnormal droppings, excessive urination, tremors, seizures, or sudden illness.
Household Hazards
Major hazards include overheated nonstick cookware and appliances, smoke, vaping aerosols, aerosol cleaners, scented candles, incense, essential-oil aerosols, open flames, ceiling fans, unsecured doors and windows, toilets, deep water, electrical cords, toxic plants, medications, reclining furniture, cats, and dogs.
A cat or dog bite or scratch requires prompt veterinary care even when the visible injury is small.
Weight and Body Condition
A digital gram scale is essential for long-term cockatoo care. Healthy adults can often be weighed weekly, while daily weights are useful during diet conversion, illness, medication, recovery, or active weight management.
Trend is more useful than comparison with a broad published range. The bird’s healthy baseline, species, frame, pectoral muscle, and fat stores should be considered together.
Understanding Droppings
Normal droppings contain feces, urates, and liquid urine. Diet, stress, fruit, bathing, and water intake can temporarily change appearance.
Persistent reduction in fecal volume, black tarry material, blood, undigested food, marked polyuria, or very green feces in a bird that is not eating warrants veterinary evaluation. Plain paper cage liners make monitoring much easier.
Why Cockatoos Hide Illness
Cockatoos can remain socially responsive despite significant disease. Early changes may include less screaming or play, reduced chewing, sleeping more, altered social dependence, decreased appetite, weight change, or different droppings.
A bird that is persistently fluffed, weak, or sitting on the cage floor may already be seriously ill.
When Veterinary Attention Is Needed
Prompt avian veterinary care is appropriate for difficulty breathing, open-mouth breathing at rest, collapse, seizures, repeated falling, inability to perch, significant weight loss, marked appetite reduction, repeated vomiting or abnormal regurgitation, major droppings changes, active bleeding, visible cloacal tissue, persistent straining, abdominal enlargement, severe self-mutilation, predator contact, suspected toxin exposure, or sudden major behavioral change accompanied by physical illness.
Supportive Care While Seeking Veterinary Help
Keep a sick cockatoo quiet and minimize unnecessary restraint. Comfortable supplemental warmth may help many ill birds when overheating is not suspected. Place food and water within easy reach and lower perches for weak birds.
Do not force water or formula into the mouth of a weak or breathing-compromised cockatoo unless specifically instructed by a veterinarian. Aspiration can be fatal. Do not use leftover antibiotics or human medications based only on symptoms.
Carrier Training
A large frightened cockatoo is difficult and potentially dangerous to move during an emergency. Carrier training should therefore be part of normal husbandry.
Keep the carrier visible, reinforce approaching and entering, and occasionally use it for neutral or pleasant experiences. A bird that voluntarily enters a carrier can be transported with far less stress and physical struggle.
Preventive Veterinary Care
A newly acquired cockatoo should receive an initial avian veterinary examination. Healthy adults should generally be examined at least annually, and older birds or those with obesity, feather destruction, reproductive disease, or chronic illness may need more frequent evaluation.
A preventive examination should assess body weight, pectoral muscle and fat stores, feet, skin, beak, oral cavity, choana, eyes, nostrils, plumage, powder down, cardiovascular and respiratory function, abdomen, reproductive history, diet, exercise, sleep, behavior, and environmental safety.
Laboratory testing should be individualized. CBC, plasma chemistry, nutritional assessment, infectious-disease testing, radiography, or other diagnostics may be appropriate depending on age, source, species, history, and previous findings.
The Older Cockatoo
Cockatoos can live for many decades. Geriatric birds may develop arthritis, pododermatitis, renal or hepatic disease, cataracts, neoplasia, cardiovascular disease, and chronic reproductive problems.
Adapt the environment while preserving activity. Wider perches, platforms, shorter routes between food and water, lower climbing distances, and safer landing surfaces can support mobility. Reduced exercise should not automatically be attributed to age without medical evaluation.
A Practical Daily Routine
Observe the cockatoo before cleaning each morning. Note posture, breathing, appetite, activity, and overnight droppings. Offer measured balanced food and fresh water, provide vegetables, and create reasons to climb, fly, chew, and forage.
Include positive social interaction and training, but also provide deliberate periods of independent activity. Rotate destructible materials and food-finding tasks. Check water again during the day, remove perishable foods before spoilage, and provide a predictable quiet dark period at night.
Useful Cockatoo Equipment
A well-prepared home includes a large strongly constructed cage or aviary appropriate to the species, secure latches, strong natural perches of varied diameter, easily sanitized bowls, a digital gram scale, a robust carrier, a play stand or safe flight area, abundant destructible toys, foraging devices, and—in powder-heavy homes—a properly sized HEPA-type air purifier.
What a Cockatoo Does Not Need
A healthy cockatoo does not need an unrestricted seed-and-nut diet, digestive grit, constantly full food bowls, indiscriminate vitamin supplements, sandpaper perch covers, automatic routine wing clipping, a dark fabric sleeping hut, punishment-based training, or continuous cuddling.
It also does not need to be taught that screaming, biting, begging, or holding droppings is the fastest way to control a person. Independence, calm stationing, normal elimination, cooperative handling, and appropriate social boundaries should be established before sexual maturity whenever possible.
The Cockatoo in Perspective
Cockatoos can be extraordinarily affectionate, playful, comic, athletic, and responsive companions. They can also be extremely loud, destructive, emotionally intense, and capable of serious bites. Successful care depends on accepting both sides of that biology.
Provide housing strong enough for the beak and large enough for the body. Preserve flight when it can be done safely and manage it thoughtfully when it cannot. Control dietary energy, especially in Galahs and sedentary birds. Offer vegetables and balanced food as everyday nutrition while using nuts and seeds strategically. Give the bird large amounts of legal material to dismantle. Protect sleep and air quality. Teach foraging and independent play. Pet primarily on the head and neck rather than turning every interaction into reproductive stimulation.
Most importantly, do not make constant dependence the price of companionship. A cockatoo that can play alone, forage while people are busy, cooperate with several caregivers, and enjoy affection without requiring continuous body contact is better equipped for the many decades it may share with people.
