African Grey Parrot Care Guide

A comprehensive husbandry and preventive-care guide for Congo and Timneh African Greys, including large-parrot housing, flight and exercise, balanced nutrition, calcium and vitamin-D management, cognition and enrichment, positive-reinforcement training, feather health, disease recognition, preventive medicine, and lifelong care.

African Grey Parrots are among the most cognitively sophisticated companion birds. Their reputation for exceptional speech and sound imitation is deserved, but vocabulary is only one small part of what makes these parrots unusual. They observe routines, notice subtle changes in the household, learn relationships between events, solve problems, anticipate what people are likely to do next, and often develop highly specific preferences about people, objects, places, and daily activities.

That intelligence creates both opportunity and responsibility. An African Grey should not be viewed as a decorative cage bird that happens to talk. It is a long-lived, medium-to-large parrot with substantial physical strength, powerful chewing ability, demanding social and cognitive needs, and several important species-associated medical risks. Good care must therefore address much more than food and cage size.

Two closely related African Grey species are commonly kept as companion birds: the Congo African Grey, Psittacus erithacus, and the Timneh African Grey, Psittacus timneh. Historically, the Timneh was treated as a subspecies of Psittacus erithacus. Current taxonomy recognizes them as separate species. Modern scientific and conservation references may use the common names Grey Parrot for P. erithacus and Timneh Parrot for P. timneh, while the names Congo African Grey and Timneh African Grey remain widely recognized in aviculture, veterinary practice, and among bird owners and are used throughout this guide.

Both species are native to Africa. Congo African Greys are associated with equatorial and central African forest, woodland edges, mangroves, and adjacent habitats. Timneh African Greys occupy a more westerly range in the Upper Guinea forest region.

In the wild, African Greys live in complex social systems, travel substantial distances, forage for varied foods, and use large trees for roosting and nesting. A companion African Grey therefore needs physical space, sustained social opportunity, meaningful choices, regular flight or vigorous exercise, varied foraging, safe destructible materials, predictable routines without becoming behaviorally rigid, balanced nutrition, excellent air quality, and preventive veterinary care throughout what may be a several-decade lifespan.

Individual body size varies. A bird's established healthy weight, pectoral-muscle condition, and body condition are more useful than forcing every African Grey into a single published weight range.

Congo African Grey and Timneh African Grey

The two African Grey species are similar enough that their basic husbandry is largely the same, but they are readily distinguishable as adults.

The Congo African Grey, Psittacus erithacus, is generally the larger of the two species. Adults have medium to light silver-grey plumage, a brilliant scarlet-red tail, pale bare facial skin around the eyes, and a dark or black beak. The iris is dark in young birds and becomes pale yellow with maturity. The Congo African Grey has traditionally been the more familiar of the two species in the companion-bird trade and is the bird many people picture when they hear the name “African Grey.”

The Timneh African Grey, Psittacus timneh, is generally smaller and darker. It typically has charcoal-grey plumage, a burgundy or maroon tail rather than bright scarlet, and a partly horn-colored, tan, or pinkish-brown upper mandible with a darker tip. Timnehs may mature somewhat earlier and are sometimes described as less cautious or somewhat more adaptable to novelty than Congos, but these are tendencies rather than dependable rules. Individual temperament, developmental history, early socialization, and life experience are much more important.

Both species require the same high standard of care. The smaller Timneh should not be treated as a small parrot simply because it weighs less than a Congo African Grey.

What Wild African Greys Teach Us About Captive Care

Wild African Greys do not spend their days sitting beside a full food dish. They fly between feeding areas, roosting locations, and social groups. They manipulate fruits, seeds, nuts, and plant materials and communicate continuously with flock members. Their environment changes constantly.

Captivity removes much of that complexity unless the owner deliberately restores opportunities to fly, climb, forage, chew, solve problems, investigate, communicate, and make choices. Some behavioral problems attributed to “African Grey personality” are better understood as the predictable response of an exceptionally intelligent parrot living in an environment that is too small, too repetitive, too sedentary, or too socially dependent on one person.

Choosing a Healthy African Grey

Observe a prospective bird quietly before it is handled. A healthy African Grey should be alert, responsive, coordinated, and interested in its surroundings. It should grip normally with both feet, move confidently between perches, and breathe quietly at rest.

The eyes should be bright and free from discharge, the nostrils clean, and the feathers reasonably smooth and organized when the bird is awake and relaxed. Persistent fluffing, sitting low on the perch or cage floor, open-mouth breathing, pronounced tail movement with every breath, nasal or ocular discharge, weakness, poor balance, abnormal feather development, or significant feather loss all warrant investigation.

African Greys are often cautious around unfamiliar people and objects. Caution alone does not indicate poor temperament. More useful is whether the bird can recover from a mild unfamiliar event and resume normal behavior.

Avoid purchasing an unweaned baby simply so the new owner can finish hand-feeding. African Greys have a prolonged developmental period, and improper hand-feeding or premature weaning can contribute to aspiration, crop burns, crop stasis, infection, nutritional disease, abnormal food dependence, and later behavioral problems. A fully weaned African Grey can form an exceptionally strong relationship with a new household.

Quarantine and the First Veterinary Visit

A newly acquired African Grey should receive an examination by a veterinarian experienced with birds soon after acquisition. If other birds already live in the home, quarantine should ideally be performed in a separate room for approximately 30–45 days.

Food and water bowls, toys, cleaning equipment, bathing supplies, and other bird-care materials should remain separate during quarantine. Hands should be washed between bird groups.

Testing should be individualized according to age, source, prior flock exposure, clinical findings, breeding history, and intended contact with other birds. Depending on circumstances, testing may include evaluation for Chlamydia psittaci, psittacine beak and feather disease virus, polyomavirus, avian bornavirus, or other infectious diseases.

The Cage Is a Home Base, Not the Whole World

An African Grey requires substantially more housing space than a budgie, cockatiel, or small conure.

A commonly quoted minimum cage size for one African Grey is approximately 40 × 30 × 60 inches (102 × 76 × 152 cm). This should be regarded as a reasonable starting point rather than an ideal endpoint. Larger is preferable whenever practical.

Horizontal space matters as much as height. A tall narrow cage may look impressive while providing surprisingly little usable movement space. The bird should be able to fully extend both wings inside the furnished cage without striking the cage bars, toys, food dishes, or perches.

Large flight cages or indoor aviary-style accommodations can provide substantial benefits, particularly for birds that spend considerable portions of the day inside their enclosure.

Bar spacing of approximately 3/4 to 1 inch (1.9–2.5 cm) is appropriate for many African Greys. Strength is just as important as spacing. An African Grey's beak can manipulate hardware, loosen fasteners, bend weak components, and destroy furnishings designed for smaller parrots. Some birds quickly learn to operate simple sliding latches, so secure bird-safe locks may be necessary.

Furnishing a Large-Parrot Cage

The cage should contain multiple activity areas rather than one favored perch beside one food dish. Sturdy natural perches, separate feeding and watering areas, destructible materials, foraging opportunities, climbing structures, and clear space for wing extension should all be incorporated.

Avoid overfilling the enclosure. The goal is not to make the cage look decorated. It is to provide useful choices while preserving movement space.

Perches and Foot Health

African Greys require substantially larger perches than small parrots and benefit from variation in both diameter and surface contour. Natural branches are particularly valuable because their irregular surfaces prevent the feet from remaining in precisely the same position throughout the day.

Appropriately prepared bird-safe woods may include apple, pear, willow, birch, ash, elm, maple, mulberry, manzanita, and other well-established safe species. Only use wood that has been positively identified and is free from pesticides, herbicides, mold, roadside exhaust contamination, and chemical treatments.

Rope perches can add useful variety but should be inspected frequently for fraying. Sandpaper perch covers should not be used, and highly abrasive cement or mineral perches should not serve as the primary sleeping or resting perch.

Cage Placement

African Greys generally do best where they can observe household activity while retaining the ability to retreat visually and rest. Many are sensitive to sudden movement, unfamiliar objects, or changes in the environment, so having one side of the cage near a wall can provide security.

Avoid kitchens, direct heating and cooling vents, exterior doors with frequent drafts, uncontrolled direct sunlight, and locations with constant unpredictable traffic.

Clean Air and Powder Down

African Greys are powder-down parrots. Specialized feathers continually produce a fine keratin powder that coats the plumage and becomes distributed throughout the environment. This is normal.

Owners may notice powder on furniture, cage bars, electronics, flooring, and clothing. Regular bathing, vacuuming, cage cleaning, and good ventilation help control accumulation. A properly sized HEPA-type particulate air purifier can be particularly useful. Ozone-generating air cleaners should be avoided.

Air quality deserves additional attention because African Greys are among the parrot species recognized as particularly susceptible to aspergillosis.

They should not be exposed to cigarette or marijuana smoke, vaping aerosols, scented candles, incense, aerosol cleaners, spray insecticides, paint and solvent fumes, essential-oil aerosols, or fumes from overheated nonstick cookware or appliances.

Temperature and Humidity

Healthy acclimated African Greys generally tolerate normal comfortable household temperatures. Approximately 65–80°F (18–27°C) is reasonable for many healthy birds when changes occur gradually.

Sudden temperature changes, direct drafts, and overheating are more important concerns than maintaining one exact indoor temperature.

Moderate household humidity is usually adequate. Extremely dry heated air may contribute to skin and feather discomfort, but regular bathing and good air quality are generally more important than attempting to reproduce tropical humidity indoors.

Light, Sleep, and Biological Rhythm

Most African Greys benefit from approximately 10–12 hours of quiet darkness each night.

Late-night television, artificial lighting, conversations, and household activity can interfere with normal sleep. Chronic sleep disruption may contribute to irritability, behavioral instability, and reproductive stimulation.

A cage cover can help when it genuinely produces darkness and security without interfering with ventilation. Some households find that a separate sleep cage in a quiet room works even better.

Natural Light and UV Lighting

Safe access to unfiltered natural light provides useful environmental and physiologic cues when escape, predators, temperature, and outdoor hazards are controlled.

Ordinary window glass blocks most biologically useful UVB. An avian-specific UV-producing lamp may be considered for birds receiving little safe natural sunlight. Manufacturer recommendations regarding distance, daily exposure, lamp replacement, and safe positioning should be followed carefully, and the bird should always be able to move away from the lamp.

Because calcium and vitamin-D physiology are especially important in African Greys, lighting deserves careful consideration. UV lighting, however, is not a substitute for balanced nutrition.

Bathing and Feather Care

African Greys produce substantial powder and benefit from regular bathing opportunities. Some enjoy showers, others prefer gentle misting, and some will bathe in a large shallow basin.

Introduce bathing gradually and allow the bird to choose the method it prefers. Plain water is normally sufficient. Routine oils, perfumes, feather sprays, and skin-conditioning products are unnecessary and may irritate the bird or alter normal feather structure.

Exercise, Flight, and Wing Clipping

African Greys are powerful fliers. Flight supports cardiovascular health, muscle condition, coordination, balance, bone strength, and psychological confidence. Whenever an appropriate environment is available, maintaining normal flight offers substantial physical and behavioral benefits.

A bird-safe room or large flight enclosure is ideal. Before allowing free flight, ceiling fans should be turned off, windows and doors secured, large glass surfaces made visible, predators excluded, toilets and open water closed, toxic plants removed, electrical hazards protected, and access to hot surfaces prevented.

A sedentary African Grey is at greater risk for obesity, poor cardiovascular fitness, and atherosclerotic disease.

Wing clipping should therefore not be viewed automatically as routine husbandry. In a properly controlled home with safe flight areas, preserving flight is usually desirable.

There are, however, circumstances in which a carefully performed conservative wing trim may be reasonable. A bird living in a home where doors are frequently opened, where secure flight areas cannot be reliably provided, or where uncontrolled flight creates an immediate risk of escape, collision, burns, access to dangerous rooms, or other injury may benefit from limited reduction in flight capability.

The objective should not be to make the bird incapable of controlled flight or to cause it to drop heavily to the floor. Excessive clipping can lead to falls, keel or leg injuries, reduced exercise, loss of confidence, and frustration. If clipping is chosen, the trim should allow controlled descent and should be individualized to the bird's body weight, feather condition, flight skill, household environment, and safety needs.

Owners should also remember that a clipped bird can still escape outdoors. Wind and adrenaline can allow surprisingly strong flight even after trimming. Harness training, secure carriers, screened outdoor enclosures, and careful door management remain necessary.

The decision is best made by balancing the physical and behavioral benefits of flight against the genuine hazards present in the individual home.

Nutrition: More Than Seeds and Nuts

Wild African Greys consume varied plant foods, including fruits, seeds, nuts, and vegetation. Captive birds often preferentially choose sunflower seed, peanuts, and other high-fat foods when unrestricted amounts are available.

A seed-and-nut-heavy diet is nutritionally incomplete and can contribute to vitamin A deficiency, calcium imbalance, obesity, hepatic disease, and cardiovascular disease.

For most healthy companion African Greys, a practical dietary framework is approximately 60–70% nutritionally complete formulated parrot food, 20–30% vegetables and leafy greens, about 5–10% fruit, and approximately 5–10% combined nuts, seeds, and other high-value foods.

These percentages are approximate rather than rigid. They should be adjusted for the individual bird's body condition, activity, reproductive status, medical history, pellet formulation, and veterinary recommendations.

The important principle is that a nutritionally complete food should provide most of the vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and energy, while fresh vegetables add variety, phytonutrients, texture, and foraging opportunities. Fruit is useful but generally should not displace vegetables. Nuts and seeds are valuable foods, especially as training rewards and foraging items, but should remain limited because of their high caloric density.

Dark leafy greens, bok choy, broccoli, red and orange bell peppers, carrots, pumpkin, sweet potato, winter squash, peas, green beans, cilantro, and other safe vegetables can be rotated routinely. Fruit may include berries, papaya, mango, melon, pomegranate, pear, and apple without seeds.

Nuts such as almond or walnut can be excellent training rewards. A Grey does not need a whole nut every time it performs a behavior; tiny pieces are often sufficient.

Calcium, Vitamin D, and the African Grey Predisposition

African Greys deserve special attention to calcium physiology.

Traditional seed-heavy diets are typically low in calcium and relatively high in phosphorus. Indoor birds may also receive little biologically useful ultraviolet exposure, potentially contributing to abnormalities in vitamin-D and calcium metabolism.

Young African Greys can develop nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism and skeletal disease. Adults are also recognized for a distinctive syndrome involving acute hypocalcemia.

The appropriate response is not to add calcium supplements indiscriminately. Calcium status must be considered together with phosphorus, vitamin D, diet, kidney function, reproductive status, and the individual bird's medical findings.

A Grey eating an appropriate complete formulated diet should not automatically receive additional calcium or vitamin D.

Converting a Seed-Dependent African Grey to Better Nutrition

African Greys can be extremely selective and sometimes suspicious of unfamiliar foods. Diet conversion should therefore be deliberate rather than confrontational.

Never starve an African Grey into eating pellets.

Before beginning conversion, obtain an accurate baseline body weight, become familiar with normal droppings, and observe normal food consumption and activity.

During active conversion, weigh the bird daily at approximately the same time. A meaningful downward trend, substantial reduction in droppings, or weight loss approaching approximately 10% of baseline should prompt reassessment and veterinary advice.

Keep new food in a familiar feeding location. Offer formulated food during morning appetite, then provide a measured portion of the familiar diet if reliable consumption has not yet been established.

African Greys are highly observant, so social learning can be useful. Handling a separate clean piece of food as though it is interesting can encourage investigation. Never offer food that has been in a human mouth.

Some Greys accept pellets more readily when presented on a shallow dish, partially crushed, lightly moistened, or mixed with finely chopped vegetables. Moist foods should be removed promptly because bacterial and fungal growth can occur rapidly.

Training can also be used. A bird may be rewarded first for approaching a pellet, then touching it, picking it up, breaking it, and finally eating it.

Foraging can be especially effective. Pellets can be hidden in paper, cardboard, simple puzzle feeders, or destructible containers. The challenge changes from “eat this unfamiliar object” to “solve this interesting problem.”

Some African Greys convert within days. Others require weeks or months. Success should be judged by actual consumption of the new food, stable weight, normal droppings, and gradual reduction in dependence on seed.

Nuts, Seeds, and Peanuts

Nuts and seeds can be useful foods but should remain a relatively small part of the total ration.

They are particularly valuable as training rewards, foraging incentives, and occasional components of fresh food mixtures. Almonds, walnuts, pistachios, and other fresh unsalted nuts can be offered in controlled quantities.

A bird that receives unlimited bowls of sunflower seed or nuts can consume a disproportionately high-fat diet even if pellets and vegetables are also available.

Peanuts deserve additional caution. Poorly stored peanuts and other foods can support fungal growth and mycotoxin contamination. Because African Greys are predisposed to aspergillosis, food quality and storage deserve particular attention.

Feed should be fresh, dry, properly stored, and discarded if there is evidence of mold, dampness, staleness, or rancidity.

Water and Grit

Fresh drinking water must always be available. African Greys frequently dunk pellets, vegetables, and other objects into their water, so bowls may require changing several times during the day.

African Greys hull seeds before swallowing them and do not need digestive grit. Excessive grit consumption can cause gastrointestinal problems.

Foods and Substances to Avoid

Avocado, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, heavily salted foods, moldy foods, unidentified plant material, and unsafe fruit pits or seeds should not be intentionally offered.

Highly processed, high-fat, or high-sugar human foods should not become routine dietary items.

Vitamin, mineral, amino-acid, calcium, or vitamin-D supplements should not routinely be added to a nutritionally complete diet unless there is a specific medical indication.

The African Grey Mind

Cognition is one of the defining characteristics of African Greys. These birds can learn far more than isolated tricks or words. Research has demonstrated abilities involving object labels, colors and shapes, categorization, numerical concepts, relationships between objects, vocal communication, and complex problem solving.

The implication for companion care is important. A Grey does not need a human entertaining it every waking minute. It does need an environment that permits choice, investigation, learning, problem solving, social communication, and independent activity.

Neophobia and Sensitivity to Change

Many African Greys are cautious about unfamiliar objects. A new toy that another parrot attacks enthusiastically may cause a Grey to retreat to the opposite side of the cage.

Do not force immediate interaction. A new object can first be placed across the room, then moved gradually closer, then placed outside the cage before eventually being introduced into the enclosure.

The goal is not to eliminate caution. It is to teach the bird that novelty can be safe.

Foraging, Chewing, and Destructible Foods and Objects

Foraging is one of the most valuable enrichment activities for African Greys.

Begin with simple challenges. Wrap a favorite food loosely in paper, place pellets beneath paper strips, or use transparent food-finding toys so the bird can see the reward.

As skill develops, more complex puzzle feeders, drawers, sliding mechanisms, destructible boxes, and hidden food compartments can be introduced.

African Greys also have a strong need to chew and destroy material. Bird-safe wood, untreated cardboard, paper, palm products, vegetable-tanned leather, and other appropriately designed large-parrot toys are useful.

Food itself can also become enrichment. A whole broccoli floret or section of broccoli stalk, a piece of cauliflower, or similar firm vegetables can be clipped securely to the cage and allowed to become both food and a shredding project. Large pieces frequently stimulate more manipulation and exploration than finely chopped food.

Clean untreated pinecones can also make excellent destructible and foraging objects when they are obtained from a known pesticide-free area, free of visible mold, sap contamination, insects, and environmental pollutants, and thoroughly cleaned and dried before use. Food can be tucked loosely between the scales to create an inexpensive foraging device.

Wild-collected natural materials should never be used unless their identity and cleanliness are reasonably certain.

Destruction should not be regarded as failure of the toy. For a parrot, dismantling an object is often exactly the intended activity.

Toy and Bell Safety

Large parrots can dismantle hardware that appears secure. Toys should be inspected frequently for loose screws, exposed wire, open chain links, cracked plastic, corrosion, frayed fibers, and openings capable of trapping a toe, wing, neck, or head.

Training: Cooperation Instead of Force

African Greys respond extremely well to positive-reinforcement training.

Particularly useful behaviors include stepping onto a hand or perch, targeting, stationing on a designated perch, entering a carrier voluntarily, stepping onto a gram scale, recall flight, returning to the cage, allowing foot inspection, and voluntarily participating in medication or examination procedures.

Training is not simply entertainment. It gives the bird predictable ways to cooperate with normal husbandry.

Chasing, shouting, spraying water as punishment, striking or flicking the beak, and deliberate intimidation should be avoided.

Speech and Sound Imitation

African Greys are famous for speech. Many reproduce household sounds with astonishing accuracy, including telephones, alarms, microwave signals, doors, coughs, other pets, and human voices.

Some use words appropriately in context. Others primarily imitate sounds.

Individual ability varies considerably, and speech should never determine the bird's value or be treated as the only measure of intelligence.

Social Needs and Avoiding the “One-Person Bird”

African Greys often develop strong social preferences. Without broad positive socialization, a bird may become highly dependent on one individual and defensive toward others.

Whenever practical, several household members should participate in positive interactions such as offering treats, training, providing meals, opening the cage, playing, or sharing calm activities.

A bird should not be forced to accept handling from a person it fears. Relationships should develop gradually.

The goal is not equal affection toward everyone. The goal is enough behavioral flexibility that the bird can function comfortably with more than one caregiver.

Petting and Reproductive Pair Bonding

Head and neck scratching resembles normal social preening and is generally appropriate when requested by the bird.

Repeated stroking over the back, rump, under the wings, lower body, or tail base can resemble sexual contact and contribute to reproductive pair bonding.

The human-bird relationship should instead be built primarily through communication, training, exercise, foraging, play, and appropriate social contact.

Reproductive Behavior

Captive conditions can provide reproductive signals throughout the year. Abundant food, long artificial days, a favored person perceived as a mate, and access to dark enclosed spaces can all contribute.

Signs may include regurgitation, nest seeking, territorial behavior, persistent shredding of potential nest material, courtship, increased aggression, or egg laying.

Reducing reproductive stimulation usually involves protecting nighttime sleep, removing nest-like cavities, avoiding sexual touching, providing more exercise and foraging, and moderating highly caloric foods.

Sex Determination

Congo and Timneh African Greys are essentially sexually monomorphic. External appearance cannot reliably determine sex.

DNA testing is the most practical method when knowing the bird's sex is important for breeding, reproductive risk assessment, interpretation of medical problems, or household planning.

Breeding

African Greys are slow-maturing parrots. Breeding requires healthy mature birds, compatible pairing, excellent nutrition, appropriate disease screening, substantial space, privacy, and suitable nest facilities.

Breeding should not be attempted simply because two birds form a social bond.

Hand-feeding should be performed only by experienced caregivers. Errors can cause aspiration pneumonia, crop burns, crop stasis, infection, malnutrition, and developmental problems.

Feather-Destructive Behavior

African Greys are frequently presented for feather chewing or plucking.

Feather destruction should never automatically be diagnosed as “boredom.” Medical causes must first be considered. Dermatologic disease, infection, pain, nutritional abnormalities, liver or other systemic illness, reproductive disease, environmental irritation, abnormal feather disorders, and other conditions may contribute.

Behavioral contributors may include inadequate sleep, anxiety, environmental instability, excessive dependence on one person, social conflict, insufficient foraging, inadequate exercise, and lack of appropriate independent activity.

Successful management usually requires both medical investigation and a careful review of the bird's daily life.

Acute Hypocalcemia and Neurologic Signs

African Greys have a recognized predisposition to episodes of hypocalcemia.

Weakness, tremors, ataxia, falling from the perch, muscle spasms, and seizures may occur.

Similar signs can result from toxic exposure, cardiovascular disease, infection, trauma, neoplasia, and other neurologic conditions.

Aspergillosis

African Grey Parrots are among the companion-bird species considered particularly susceptible to aspergillosis.

Aspergillus spores are common in the environment. Disease becomes more likely with heavy spore exposure, moldy food, damp organic material, poor ventilation, vitamin A deficiency, malnutrition, immunosuppression, aspiration, or other illness.

Signs may include weight loss, lethargy, reduced appetite, voice change, rapid breathing, labored breathing, and exercise intolerance.

Disease may involve the lungs, air sacs, trachea, syrinx, or other tissues. Prevention emphasizes excellent ventilation, dry clean feed, avoidance of mold, good nutrition, and prompt treatment of underlying disease.

Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease

Psittacine beak and feather disease is caused by a circovirus and is particularly important in younger parrots.

Abnormal feather development, progressive feather loss, abnormal feather shafts, immunosuppression, and beak abnormalities may occur.

A young African Grey with abnormal feather growth should be evaluated rather than assumed to be having an unusual molt.

Avian Chlamydiosis / Psittacosis

Chlamydia psittaci can infect African Greys and people.

Affected birds may show lethargy, poor appetite, weight loss, respiratory signs, ocular or nasal discharge, abnormal green or yellow-green droppings, and occasionally neurologic abnormalities.

Some infected birds show very few signs. Because this disease is zoonotic, suspected infection requires appropriate veterinary diagnosis, treatment, hygiene, and attention to human exposure.

Avian Bornavirus and Proventricular Dilatation Disease

Avian bornavirus infection has been associated with proventricular dilatation disease and neurologic disease in parrots.

Possible signs include chronic weight loss, regurgitation, abnormal gastrointestinal motility, undigested food in droppings, weakness, tremors, or coordination abnormalities.

Infection and clinical disease are not synonymous, so test interpretation can be complex.

Cardiovascular Disease and Atherosclerosis

African Greys are among the parrot species with increased risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease.

Although atherosclerosis becomes more common with age, it has also been documented in relatively young African Greys. Risk may be influenced by genetics, diet, inactivity, obesity, lipid metabolism, and age.

Possible signs include reduced exercise tolerance, weakness, increased respiratory effort, intermittent collapse, fainting-like episodes, and sudden death.

Prevention centers on maintaining a healthy body condition, limiting high-fat foods, providing regular exercise and flight when safe, and monitoring older birds closely.

Obesity and Liver Disease

African Greys can become overweight when high-fat seed and nut intake is combined with insufficient activity. Feathers make obesity surprisingly difficult to recognize visually.

Regular weighing and hands-on body-condition assessment are therefore important. Obesity can contribute to hepatic disease, orthopedic stress, reduced exercise tolerance, and cardiovascular disease.

Respiratory Disease

A healthy African Grey should breathe quietly at rest.

Open-mouth breathing, persistent tail bobbing, clicking or wheezing, altered voice, nasal discharge, reduced stamina, or obvious respiratory effort should be taken seriously.

Possible causes include bacterial infection, fungal disease, chlamydiosis, inhaled toxins, nutritional disease, cardiovascular disease, and neoplasia.

A Grey in significant respiratory distress should be handled as little as possible because restraint increases oxygen demand.

Heavy-Metal Toxicosis

African Greys investigate metal objects with their beaks.

Potential sources of lead or zinc include cage hardware, jewelry, curtain weights, old paint, stained-glass materials, fishing equipment, household hardware, and miscellaneous metal objects.

Possible signs include weakness, regurgitation, abnormal droppings, excessive urination, neurologic abnormalities, seizures, and sudden illness.

Known ingestion or substantial chewing of suspicious metal warrants prompt veterinary evaluation.

Household Hazards

Major household risks include overheated nonstick materials, smoke, vaping aerosols, aerosol cleaners, scented candles, incense, essential-oil aerosols, open flames, ceiling fans, unsecured windows and doors, toilets, deep water, electrical cords, toxic plants, medications, reclining furniture, cats, and dogs.

A cat or dog bite requires prompt veterinary attention even when the external injury appears minor.

Weight and Body Condition

A digital gram scale is one of the most useful pieces of equipment an African Grey owner can purchase.

Establish the bird's healthy individual baseline. Weekly weighing is appropriate for many healthy adults. Daily weighing becomes especially useful during diet conversion, illness, medication, recovery, or reproductive disease.

Trend matters more than comparison with one published “normal” range. Weight should also be interpreted together with pectoral muscle and fat stores. A bird can lose important muscle while remaining deceptively heavy.

Understanding Droppings

Normal bird droppings contain feces, urates, and liquid urine. Diet, stress, and water consumption can temporarily change their appearance.

Persistent reductions in fecal volume, black tarry stool, visible blood, undigested food, marked polyuria, or very green droppings in a bird that is no longer eating are concerning.

Plain paper beneath the cage makes monitoring easier.

Why African Greys Hide Illness

African Greys are prey animals and often conceal early disease.

Subtle changes may include reduced speech or whistling, altered daily routine, less interest in flight, sleeping earlier, increased clinginess, decreased appetite, weight loss, or changes in droppings.

By the time a bird remains persistently fluffed and inactive, disease may already be advanced.

When Veterinary Attention Is Needed

Prompt avian veterinary care is appropriate for difficulty breathing, open-mouth breathing at rest, persistent tail bobbing, seizures, tremors, collapse, repeated falling, inability to perch, significant weight loss, marked reduction in appetite, repeated vomiting or abnormal regurgitation, substantial changes in droppings, active bleeding, abdominal enlargement or straining, predator contact, suspected toxin exposure, or a sudden major behavioral change accompanied by signs of illness.

Supportive Care While Seeking Veterinary Help

Keep a sick African Grey quiet and minimize unnecessary restraint.

Comfortable supplemental warmth can help many ill birds when overheating is not suspected. Food and water should be placed within easy reach, and a severely weak bird may be safer in a hospital-style enclosure with low perches or padded flooring.

Do not force water or formula into the mouth of a weak or breathing-compromised bird unless specifically instructed by a veterinarian. Aspiration can be fatal.

Human medications and leftover antibiotics should not be given simply because the bird's symptoms appear similar to a previous illness.

Carrier Training

An African Grey can become extremely suspicious of a carrier if the carrier appears only before veterinary visits.

Make the carrier part of normal life. Leave it visible, place treats or toys inside, reward approaching, and then reward voluntary entry.

Occasionally using the carrier for neutral or pleasant experiences helps prevent it from becoming a predictor of frightening events.

Voluntary carrier entry is one of the most valuable trained behaviors for a large intelligent parrot.

Preventive Veterinary Care

A newly acquired African Grey should receive an initial avian veterinary examination.

Healthy adults should generally be examined at least annually, while older birds or birds with chronic disease may benefit from more frequent evaluation.

A preventive examination should assess body weight, pectoral muscle and body condition, diet, beak, oral cavity, eyes, nostrils, plumage, skin, feet, cardiovascular and respiratory function, abdomen, reproductive history, behavior, sleep, exercise, and environmental safety.

Laboratory testing should be individualized. Depending on age and history, a CBC, chemistry profile, calcium assessment, lipid evaluation, infectious-disease testing, radiography, or other diagnostics may be appropriate.

The Older African Grey

African Greys may live for many decades, so owners should plan for geriatric care long before it is needed.

Older birds may develop arthritis, cataracts, renal disease, hepatic disease, cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis, neoplasia, chronic reproductive disease, and reduced mobility.

The cage may need modification with easier routes between food and water, wider or platform perches, reduced climbing distances, and safer landing areas.

Reduced activity should not automatically be dismissed as old age. A previously active Grey that becomes reluctant to climb or fly deserves medical evaluation.

A Practical Daily Routine

Begin each morning by observing the bird before cleaning the cage. Notice posture, breathing, alertness, appetite, and overnight droppings.

Provide fresh water and balanced food. Offer vegetables. Allow substantial exercise or flight when safe. Give the bird something intended to be destroyed and provide at least one foraging opportunity.

Spend time training, communicating, or interacting socially, but also allow the bird opportunities to play and forage independently.

Check drinking water again during the day because many African Greys enjoy turning it into soup.

Remove perishable foods before spoilage and provide a predictable period of quiet darkness each night.

Useful African Grey Equipment

A well-prepared home generally includes a large durable cage or indoor aviary, strong natural perches of varied diameter, large-parrot-safe destructible toys, foraging toys and puzzle feeders, easily sanitized food and water bowls, a digital gram scale, a secure large-parrot carrier, a play stand or safe flight area, bathing options, and—in dusty environments—a properly sized HEPA-type air purifier.

What an African Grey Does Not Need

A healthy African Grey does not need an unrestricted seed-and-peanut diet, digestive grit, indiscriminate calcium supplementation, routine antibiotics, prophylactic antiparasitic medication without an indication, sandpaper perch covers, automatic routine wing clipping, a dark fabric sleeping hut, a mirror as a substitute for social interaction, punishment-based training, or constant physical handling.

It also does not need a human to entertain it every waking minute.

A psychologically healthy African Grey should develop the ability to forage, play, explore, rest, and occupy itself independently.

The African Grey in Perspective

African Greys are sometimes chosen because someone wants a bird that talks.

That is not enough reason to own one.

The extraordinary voice comes attached to an animal capable of decades of learning, memory, preference, social attachment, caution, frustration, exploration, and problem solving.

Good ownership therefore requires long-term planning.

Provide space large enough for a real parrot rather than a decorative cage bird. Preserve normal flight whenever it can be done safely, but make flight-management decisions according to the actual risks in the individual home.

Feed for calcium balance, cardiovascular health, and longevity rather than immediate preference. Make food worth finding. Provide vegetables and safe natural materials that can be shredded and destroyed.

Teach cooperative behaviors before they become medically necessary. Broaden the bird's social world rather than encouraging dependence on one person. Protect sleep. Protect air quality. Learn the bird's normal weight, droppings, voice, posture, and activity.

Most importantly, allow the bird to remain a parrot.

An African Grey living in a thoughtfully designed environment can be an extraordinary companion—not simply because it can reproduce human speech, but because it can participate actively in a relationship while retaining the physical, cognitive, and behavioral life that makes the species remarkable.
